They usually seem fine for a while, then just unexpectedly fall over dead while you're looking at them.

yes one day they are alive and well and the next day drop dead. My dog used to sniff out the dens all the time requiring a baby rabbit rescue mission

A little black spot on my phone made me read this as “frying”. Which I thought was a fitting thing to do.

OP, came here late to say I know a dozen or so folks that have tried to keep a wild cottontail (including my kids on 2 different occasions) and am not sure if any were successful.
