Any reason why the 6.5 creedmoor wouldn't make for a great youth rifle?

Weatherby makes the vanguard in 6.5 creedmoor cartridge. They sell 120 grain ammo for this cartridge as well. Any reason this wouldn't be a great youth option as well as a rifle he can use forever?

My original thinking was always going with the 7mm-08.

It would make a great one. Has a little more recoil than a .243. I ordered a custom 6.5 Creedmoor from Alamo Precision Riles last week.

Either caliber is great for kids. Would get this before a weatherby.

the weatherby is enticing due to the adjustable length of pull options it comes with. Most other compact rifles don't come with that feature. Is it just a pad extension i would have to add down the road or what?

you're looking at 11-12 ft-lbs of recoil energy with a 7mm-08, vs 13-15 ft-lbs of recoil energy with a 6.5CM, depending on loads. the difference there isn't much

ballistically, they're pretty tight as well

120gr GMX in 6.5CM w/ 100yd zero

.45BC
-2.8in at 200, -10.66in at 300, -24.37in at 400
2149ft-lb energy at 100, 1847 at 200, 1581 at 300, 1345 at 400

120gr VORTX in 7mm-08 w/ 100yd zero

.373BC
-3in at 200, -11.71 at 300, -27in at 400
2023ft-lb energy at 100, 1681 at 200, 1386 at 300, 1133 at 400

if we're using 1000ft-lb energy as our benchmark for whitetail energy, 450yd is your limit with 120gr 7mm-08, 550yd is your limit with 120gr 6.5CM (FYI, <1000ft-lb can absolutely get the job done with a proper shot.)

buy whatever is cheaper. they're very close to one another unless youre into long range paper punching (the 7mm-08 is supersonic out to 975yd vs 1200yd for 6.5CM)

My daughters shoot a 7mm-08 with 120 gr Hornady reduced recoil loads and they love it. Can shoot up to 160gr when they get bigger if needed. Not sure what the upper end of lead you can shoot in a 6.5, but I know with the 7mm-08 you aren't limiting him to just a light gun.

Edit: just went and looked at ballistics. 6.5 and 7mm-08 are damn near the same thing unless your kid is shooting over 400 yards. Both guns are fine.

My first kill was with a .260 Remington, which is right between 7mm-08 and .243:

308 Parent case:
22-250 - 5.56mm bullet
.243 - 6mm bullet
.260 - 6.5mm bullet
7mm-08 - 7mm bullet
308 - 7.62mm bullet

My little man (11yr) has been shooting my AR-10 in 6.5cm. It is very heavy and that helps with the recoil but we’re using 143gr ELD-x bullets loaded a little hot.

He hasn’t been able to get one with it yet but it will.

Exactly. I think people are getting them just because it sounds cool to them. Like the latest buzzword or something.

Supposedly it's a performer. If that's true then the craze is semi warranted.

And because of the craze, the ammo selection is greater than the 7mm-08 and much greater than 260. So I guess it's a worthy round
