The islands weren't just off limits to protect him. They are also off limits to protect the islanders from disease. His lil proselytizing trip could end up killing more than him.

He was warned and knew what he was doing. Even after being given what were apparently warning shots with arrows, he continued and was last seen being dragged off with a rope around his neck.
They did recover his body on the beach.

Sentinel is pretty fascinating to read about. Totally autonomous and sovereign island that has basically no interference from the outside even as far as prosecution goes for killing anyone. They’ve been killing outsiders for years with no consequences from India. Hell, I think they even throw you in jail if you even get close enough or aid someone’s visit.
