First time dog owner.
Looking for:
1) Medium to large sized
2) Intelligent
3) Not necessarily vicious but would make strangers think twice about breaking in
4) Good with kids

Not sure what else, but that's a start.

Lab or Golden retriever.

We have an English Cream Retriever, great family dog, barks at strangers.

all depends on what all you want and how much time you can put into the dog. You want it just to be a yard dog and bark at someone who shouldnt be in the yard? Want it to blood trail a deer or tree a squirrel? Personally I like catahoula's which is what i have now and they are great blood dogs. But they don't tree squirrels worth a dern so may want a mountain or blackmouth cur for that. I love Catahoulas but they are super high energy and need attention and a job to do or they can get destructive but they are great with kids and can sound terrifying to someone who aint supposed to be there.

you forgot to add:
- doesn't leave hair all over the place
- doesn't stink, so when the minute someone enters the house they know a dog is present
- doesn't make a human pick up the dogs feces
- takes care of itself, instead of relatives/neighbors/kennel$$, when you go on vacation

happy hunting

I have a litter of lab puppies... good for family pets but bark and are big enough to cause strangers to pause.

Get a Pudelpointer. No shedding, smart and versatile. Driven, great personality, and they can turn it off at home. I use mine to track blood, hunt quail, retrieve ducks and he's a great family dog. Give this breed a look.

Wait, you have a dog trained to pick up it's own shite? That's amazing.

My dad's best friend and one of my best friends were/is vets. The one dog that neither of them trust is a chow. They have both said that a chow will turn on someone faster than anything.

Just food for thought.
