All terrains vs mud tires

My fellow OBers with 4x4 trucks,
I just replaced my old truck with one new to me.
Like many of us who own 4x4's, my truck sees 90% of its life going places where four wheel drive isn't needed. I have purchased mud type tires several times for my trucks in the past, but I have never purchased all terrains. I have my eye on some BFG AT's that look nice. Usually my trucks wore something like Buckshots, or similar. How good or bad do all terrains perform in mud? What are some good all terrain brands or styles?
Should I forget the all terrains and stay with the "mud" style tires. I currently have a 10 minute drive to work, so I don't put lots of miles on a truck.
Help me out OB brothers
Thanks, Upgrade.

I'll probably never own another pair of mud tires again. If I'm in a place that requires a mud tire over my BFG AT I probably shouldn't be taking my daily driver through it.

Agreed. I had toyo MTs on my last truck and wont put them on another. Yea they look good but I never really used them in a place that AT couldnt go.

General Grabber AT2's
2/3 the price (or less) of BFG AT's, will last 75,000 miles (on 1/2 ton) if rotated every oil change, same traction.

I've bought nothing but Cooper at3's for the past 10 years. I've never got stuck, they have no road noise and I've gotten 60K+ out of the 3 sets I've put on 3 different trucks

Got mine from tread depot, BFG was $65 more per tire than the Generals but had $120 rebate plus free shipping and no tax so it cost me $10 more per tire.
ETA - Skid Marks said they would price match the online price if you have one near you and prefer buying from a brick and mortar establishment, but then you have to pay taxes on them.

if I need to go in some serious mud, I typically take a 4-wheeler nowdays so I don't need heavy mud tires on a pickup any more...
a/t tires are a step above street tires, but nowhere near as good in the mud as traditional mud tires...much more plesant ride on the road, too...
the short of it is, A/T tires are closer to street tires than they are to mud tires...

What I tell people is...If you have to ask mud vs all-terrain, you don't need mud terrains.
I have owned two sets of Mickey Thompson ATZs, and they performed really well in the mud. Not mud terrain good, but better than any all terrain on the market. I have BFG ATs right now, and they are also pretty good. I'd suggest those for you.

I put the Toyo Open Country MTs on my current truck and have been happy with them. I've got 40k miles on them now and will probably go another 10k before I replace them. That's comparable to the mileage I was getting on street as well as ATs on my previous F350. They only seem to get louder when they need to be rotated/balanced. Are the excessive? Yes, but I'll probably go back with the same once these are done.

I've had mud tires for the past 15 years. I use to drive 10 miles in 4 wheel drive every time I went to my deer stand. Not hunting there any more and got ATs. Haven't been stuck yet but have rutted up some roads and fields that I normally would have never spun a tire. I'm very tempted to take them off and get a mud tire and try to sell my ATs on facebook or something.

have these on my Tundra... have 51k on them and will get at least another 10-12k out of them. I'm on the road a lot and the function well during the rain, also when i need them at the camp.
Saying this... i was going to buy the Michelin AT 2s i think is what they were called before buying these. I did a lot of research... seem to be the 2 best all around tires

Check into the Toyo RT's not a mud tire but more aggressive than AT. I've gotten 45,000 out of my current Fierce Attitudes on a 2500HD should get another 10-15,000 out of them but I'm going with the RT's next!

Thanks to all for your replies.
It's a difficult decision for me because I don't put many miles on my trucks in a year. If I did put an average amount of miles I probably wouldn't even question it.

Just bought a set of Toyo Open Country RT's. Hardly any road noise, ride good and have a 45,000 mile warranty.

Well I just put super swampers on mine and it will make it to the back canal.
Best all terrain I ever had was mastercraft courser AT. They were cheap and did really well on and off road.
The old man had cooper ST's on his old truck. I think that was the best all terrain tire I ever saw. cooper st

I have the BFG all terrains. They're aggressive enough to get you through some mud, just not stupid shite. I'll definitely replace them with another set when they give out, if they last a good while.

Did you really put swamper on your truck?
I had my dads swampers on my '90 Toyota for a few months, a long time ago.
That thing was awesome with those tires. You know how most of us use our trucks today though, I didn't absolutely HAVE to have four wheel drive, it just makes life easier sometimes. I know my truck doesn't need mud tires, but with the few miles I drive to work, and the camp, it doesn't really hurt me to run stuff like Buckshots. I bought the ones for my other truck in '10, and they still had decent tread. I'm not getting the tires immediately, anyway, so I've got a lil while to think about it.

Yea it's got some bias 10 ply pizza cutter swampers on it now. I put about 3000 miles a year on it.
In my experience I would stay away from the BFG KM2's. They look like an aggressive all terrain but the BFG all terrains do just as good in mud IMO and ride/last better. I had KM2's on my old truck and they didn't clean out well unless you spin them hard.
