Mostly going to be hunting whitetails but want something I can take big game hunting also. The average shots will be in the 400-500 yard range. But would also like to be able to shoot some longer distances at the range or potentially in the field.

.300 mag? 7 mm mag? Something else?

What y'all got?

If you're really expecting to shoot elk at 500+ yards on average than .300 win mag is the obvious choice and I'd say something like .338 win mag would probably be better.

That's really fricking far to be shooting at big shite and you need big bullets to do it and a whole lot of practice. Prepare thy wallet. That will take an expensive setup and more importantly a whole lot of range time.

How much experience do you have shooting at 500 yards from field shooting positions?

Those are some major distances. The fact that you have to ask what caliber you need for 500+ yard shots makes me think you aren't ready to be taking them. Nothing against you, just that you're talking about long shots.

Those are dropping close to and more than 4ft at 500 yards. Where a .300 Win Mag or .338 Win Mag is about 3ft at 500 yards.

500 yards isn't a chip shot. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I'd rather have a flatter shooting gun at that distance with more arse than is needed than not enough, especially if I'm elk hunting because that's not something I want to come up shorthanded on, due to equipment.

Remington 700 Sendero in 300 win mag with a Swarovski Z6 2,5-15x56 set up with ballistic turrets

or

Browning X-bolt Hell's Canyon Long Range McMillan in 300 win mag with a Swarovski Z6 2,5-15x56 set up with ballistic turrets.

Either will work just fine.

Average? No way. If you're average shot were at those distances you wouldn't need to ask the internet.

That said... I like a 7mm.

I've got a Browning 300 short mag. How would I fair at those distances? I've killed at 200 yard a couple times and that's a long shot for me.

I just like the gun and if I shoot at 100 yards I know one thing. I'm not chasing after a deer.

Yea to average 500 yards you'd have to be shooting long on purpose.

OP reads like a high schooler looking for a sniper rifle. Not saying that's the case, just what it sounds like. The people who have enough time behind a rifle to actually make those shots consistently are very familiar with the hardware required.

I'm definitely not. I wouldn't take a shot outside of 200-250 at the moment. But Step 1 is buy the gun. Followed by Step 2, learn to shoot it lol.

The 400-500 yard shot would be at whitetails. This is based off of knowing people who shoot them at 400 somewhat regularly. I have no clue how far the average shot at elk would be as I've never never been on an elk hunt. But would like to have a gun more than capable of shooting one.

I realize opinions vary greatly on topics like this. That's why I'm asking.

The 30-06 was developed over 100 years ago and they could have stopped right there. Perfectly fine for all of North American game. Manufacturers have to sell rifles though and they are constantly coming up with the next "greatest cartridge".
