Adding length of pull to a rifle

My wife is wanting to deer hunt a little more this year. She is a little recoil sensitive. My .308’s are a little more recoil than she’d prefer.
She likes shooting my .223 AR. I know that can work with the right ammo. What’s yalls thoughts on that?
The other option is a youth model .243 that I grew up shooting. I think that’s my best option. The biggest problem leads to my main question. It’s a youth model Harrington and Richardson with a length of pull of about 12.5 inches. She shot it once and it scoped her
I can’t really blame her because I shot it a few times after that and it would clip me a little bit. You just can’t pull the gun far enough into your shoulder to get a good back stop since it’s so small.
The scope that came with the gun sits a little weird so I might try swapping around a different scope and see if I can add a bigger buffer. Maybe I can add a little scope mount that moves it further forward. If I can’t get that to work, is there anything that could fairly easily give a little better length of pull?
I could always just buy her something, but that’s not really in the budget right now and I don’t know how long her interest will last
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Slip on recoil pad is easy button for adding LOP. Relatively cheap too.
A .223 she can shoot well is a whole lot better than a .243 she cant shoot well. Given those options its a no brainer. Guys out west are grizzly bear hunting with .223's these days. Im hunting with one but havent gotten to shoot a deer with it yet. Using 77gr sierra tipped match king ammo, which is what the western guys worship as the .223 bullet to use.

That answers both questions. Will look into .223 ammo first mainly because I think she’s scared from that scope hitting her on the .243

Put a suppressor on the .308 and she won’t feel a thing.

Federal fusion. My kids killed a bunch of deer with them.

Note that in addition to the slip-on recoil pad, you can also buy gel inserts that are designed to fit inside a recoil pad. If you combine the two you can make a slip-on pad even longer. I've done it and it works well to adjust the length of pull.
I'd go with the.243 provided she can confidently shoot it.

a suppressor
I didnt bring it up because OP didnt ask, but a suppressor on the AR would be great.
Being able to spot hits at any range is awesome

I’m gonna get a suppressor on both guns at some point. Built myself a new hunting rifle and bought a turkey gun earlier this year so gotta build up the fun money account before suppressors

My son killed his first deer with a 223 last year. Deer didn’t go far.

Figure out what her proper length of pull is (generally 12.5” would fit most women), and adjust from there. If that LOP is right, something else needs to change to prevent getting scoped.
Eta: You already said the scope fits a little weird. I’d try something with better eye relief, and you may also want to add a cheek riser if she can’t get a proper cheek weld.
Personally, I like a shorter length of pull over one that’s too long for me. It sits just right with a couple layers on. I’m 5”8” ,and 12.5” LOP is a little short but still works pretty good for me.

Recoil pad. Problem solved

Adult stock.
Swap it over.
Or slip on pad.
Or a rolled up towel.
Or a shoulder recoil pad and heavy clothes.

Harrington and Richardson
I had one and it kicked for worse due poor fit. If it is so she ENJOYS shooting and hunting get her a better gun.

My kids have killed most of their deer with a .223 using Barnes 69gr bullets. If you want a heavier bullet, there are reduced recoil loads for .308 you can try. I would just throw a slip on limbsaver on the .308 so you can stay sighted in with your current bullets.

Yes. Gun I grew up on

This will happen if she enjoys it. This year is a bit of a test run. I have a couple of .308's laying around she could use but only my new one is fit for a suppressor. I might could try some reduced recoil in those too. I've got options for her to give it a shot this year.

I'm thinking this might be the problem. I got my gun at home and measured, and the scope eye relief sits about 1.5-2 inches further back on the stock than mine.
I'm fairly certain the scope that is on this gun is the scope that came on it when my dad bought it 20 years ago

I hunt with a AR-15 cambered in 6.8 SPC. Usually use the Hornady 120 grain bullets. Hardly any recoil and drops the deer every time.

Those lil crack barrels kick above their weight class and cheap scopes suck at eye relief . Me and my kids have killed at least 5 with a 223 shooting fusions out to 175yd or so and the damage is every bit as impressive as any other kill.
Another option is reduced recoil ammo for a 308.

Swap every scope you have for one with good eye relief. There is no reason a scope should ever touch your face.

I bought a tikka lite veil with 400rds of these. I'm hoping to try it out this year.
