A Good Deer Hunt

So my friend Bernie Reed called me today. Bernie owns Reed's Metals (shameless plug) and he helped me a lot earlier this year on the Outdoor Kitchen build. So I owed him a big favor. He is a good friend not just to me, but to many others who are lucky enough to be in his circle.
Anyhow, he has a house full of family in town from Florida. One family member in particular who has had a rough year. He lost his wife earlier this summer. And he has been battling some health problems himself. He really enjoys deer hunting, but the biggest deer he had ever killed in central Florida was a 4pt.
So Bernie asked if he could come over and try to get a nice buck. Bernie's 18yo daughter (no pics) drove him over for an afternoon hunt.
In October T4 and I went HAM on a project for a stand built special to accommodate kids, the elderly, and people with health problems or handicaps (my father is 79 years old). This gentleman wasn't able to climb a ladder into a Millenium stand. So I sent him to the new build. Worked out perfect because he was able to climb the stairs and get into the stand with no problems.
Anyhow, he was only there an hour this afternoon and a 17 inch 9pt came out and set him up for a perfect shot. He was so excited and thankful that he had tears in his eyes.
I was glad to be able to help out a friend, who was in turn helping out a friend who was having a tough time. I hope it brings them both some real joy this holiday season.
We are all lucky to have good health and the ability to enjoy the outdoors. So from Port Gibson, MS to OBers everywhere. Have a happy Thanksgiving. And don't forget to give thanks for what really matters.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why we do it.

I played on a competitive softball team one year that was sponsored by him. It was one of the best teams in the state that year.

Always nice when a guest really appreciates the opportunity to hunt your place. You done good and so did he.

This is why I enjoy putting in the work to make a place better year in and out. I get as much pleasure out of helping set up someone on a deer as I do killing them myself. Giving people that don't have the opportunity to hunt a chance to hunt and kill a deer is what it's all about. Sometimes it means spending money to ensure you can accommodate all kinds of people that want to hunt that don't ordinarily get to, but it's worth the investment when you see how much people appreciate it.

You sir, seem like a great man. Between the OB kids deer hunt, the coolers , and this. I'd buy you many of beers if we ever met.

It is refreshing to know there are still landowners out there that will allow a kill of a non trophy. Tip of the hat to both of you, hunter and landowner.

Tip of the hat to both of you. I also enjoy taking others and seeing them enjoy the outdoors. Your parents should be proud.

Fantastic people. They did our camp and all the out buildings. They were great to work with.

Bernie dated a Baywatch girl for several years. I mean, literally a Baywatch actress from the 90s.
