On a camp dock on Lake Catherine one afternoon in late March, 8-year-old Drew Dubuc must have imagined he had hooked into a sea monster, much like the tales he’s read and heard from those ancient sailors.

Drew loves to use live mullets for the bull reds that frequent the Lake Catherine area. The first fish that day to snap up the offering was not a redfish but a 33.9-pound striped bass. After about a 30-minute battle, Drew was able to bring the fish to the dock.

With the big striper worn out, Drew stuck the rod in the holder and ran down the pier to the camp for help. His dad, Mike Dubuc, was able to bring the fish on the deck.

Several certified scales later, most marinas only have scales that weight 30 pounds or less, the Gulf striper is a possible No. 6 on the State Top 10 Fish Records list maintained by the Louisiana Outdoors Writer Association. If approved by the LOWA’s Fish Record Committee, the youngster’s striper will be the first to crack the top 10 in 14 years.

Awesome! Congrats to him. That’s a hell of a story to tell for years to come.

Good for the kid, and it probably made him a fisherman for life chasing the big ones.

I'm curious what kind of rod n reel he was using, what test line, etc. That shite would probably either pop any line I had tied on, or break my shite.

Wow. What luck!

Are stripers very common around Lake Catherine?

They are all but gone from Toledo, but there are still some on the Sabine below the lake. I wasn't aware of any other place in LA where they were caught very often. I know it's a salt water fish, but I thought they were much more common in the northeast/New England.

Sounds like he was fishing for bull reds so I imagine he was well equipped.

I remember catching some nice stripers in Toledo when I was a kid. Always wondered what happened to them.

They quit stocking them in 2009. Still some in the lake, but I don't think anyone targets them anymore as numbers have declined. Supposedly there are still some below the dam.

I caught one out of the Port of W St Mary fishing around the bluffs and the small platforms in that area way back when there were lilly pads everywhere around the Point due to re-routing of freshwater from the Atchafalaya.

Only time I have seen one from saltwater.

They are still common in the Lake but no one really targets them. They head to deeper cooler water in the Summer where there are natural springs in the rivers (i.e. Amite, Pearl, Bogue Falaya, Tangipahoa, Tchefuncte, Boga Chitto, Natalbany, Bedico Creek, Tickfaw River, etc.). They can live up to 30 years. The Causeway in the spring fishing the pilings jigging white beetles on lead jigs used to slay them. Louisiana used to stock them until Hurricane Katrina destroyed the hatchery but every other state that surrounds Louisiana stocks them including Miss.

The fall-off for the striped bass fishery occured when they were shell dredging Lake Pontchartrain IMO. However, there has been a rebound because there is still a pretty vibrant fishery in March, April & May in the Lake as they chase Alabama shad back towards the northshore rivers fishing the Causeway.

That would have been one hell of a fight from a dock.

Kid obviously knows well how to play big fish. Guarantee that catch made the young man a fisherman for life, and that's just awesome.

I was standing next to my cousin when he landed a 36#er on Beaver Lake, so I understand the kid's elation.

Most of the Mississippi River oxbow lakes have them. They were stocked at one time in the land locked lakes also. I know False River and Bruin had a ton of them in the past. I haven’t caught one in a few years though.

Obviously, I’ve never caught one that big, but the bigger ones you can cut into steaks and grill. Good stuff.

That is a great fish and I’m sure that guy is hooked for life. Is that the same fish that we catch in Tennessee and call rockfish? Up here 40lbs is not uncommon and have had a few 60+. May be a different fish though.
