I'm thinking about buying a 7-08 for a dual purpose gun. One for my lady friend to use from a shooting house on an open field, and also for me to use in the woods for close up stuff. I have a 270 I use on the fields but it's a little too long for her and I'm not keen on using it up close since I'm shooting the 140 grain BTSP interlock at 3050 fps. I was thinking a 7-08 would fit the bill for both.

I would prefer to load the 139 grain Hornady Interlock for her and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with that bullet up close on chest or shoulder shots. In the field we can usually wait for a broadside shot, or the distance is enough that I haven't had a bullet blow up on a shoulder, but not if I'm hunting a trail leading to the field. Will that bullet be tough enough started at around 2800 fps or would I be better off moving up to the 154 grain ? I really prefer to shoot shoulders to anchor them in place if at all possible and given the choice that's the shot I would be taking.

I use 140g Accubonds and get pass throughs everytime with shoulder shots. Last season when ammo was scarce I used 139g hornady american whitetail ammo and didn’t lose any deer, all passed through at 125 yards

For the money might be the best bullet out there.
I haven’t shot them in 7mm08 but shot a mature bucks at about 60 yards with a 62 grain .223 fusion and it punched through both shoulder blades and almost exited the skin on the far side. Bullet supposed to be doing about 3000fps and it looked like a text book mushroom. Chest cavity was jello.

I shoot fusion out of my 7mm-08. If it groups well with your rifle I would look no farther.

Another vote for this. I've owned lots of rifles and shot shitloads of different bullets. When I'm hunting along I still take my kids' 7mm-08 and shoot 140 gr fusions, same as my 9 yr old.

Right now, anything you can find that shoots well in your gun. But seriously, I’m a huge fan of Accubond in every caliber I hunt with.

I used to use that bullet before the great ammo grab of 2020. Have only shot up to 150 yds, and it dropped them all.

In another scenario, my uncle uses the same gun and bullet and they always run.

So I’m gonna go with you’ll be fine at any distance with proper shot placement.

7-08 is almost identical to 308.

For what you have describe, I'd load up some ttsx or partitions in the 120-140 range (I don't have a 7mm so not sure what they have at that diameter) and not worry about a thing.

I have been shooting the 100gr interlocks at 2950fps out of my .243 for a few years now. No issues with the bullet blowing up but I don't generally take chest or shoulder shots.

I’ve had a really hard time getting TTSX to group out of several of my rifles.

In my 6.5 grendel I could not get a group under about 8” at 100yards.

Nosler Accubonds, Nosler partition or Sierra game kings all group unbelievably well. My favorite though is probably Berger’s Elite Hunters.

Man.... if i’ve said it once i’ve said it 1000 times. Hornady American Whitetail (interlocks) is the best value out there. I run them in all my guns and have flawless performance. Premium bullets? Accubonds are my go to for my .35 Whelen..... only because the don’t make it in American Whitetail.

I’ve used Hornady Interlock for a long time and loaded for .270, .280, 30–06, 308, and 7MM Rem Mag and they have performed well in all those calibers at ranges from 40 yards to 400 yards. I’ve loaded a lot of different bullets but the Hornady Interlock is still one of my go to favorites. The lead and jacket combination perform similar to a Nosler Partition with a good mushroom and a lot of retained lead base pushing that mushroom.
I plan to load the 139 for my grandson’s 7MM-08 rifle this fall for whitetail and maybe some 175 interlock for an elk hunt

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll try the 139's. I like Nosler bullets but they are hard to get and expensive and I've had good luck with Hornady and can get them right now for around 35.00 per 100.

The powders I have for now are N140, N550, and H4350. I'm hoping the N550 will work as I bought 5 lbs for an '06 project that I never got around to messing with. I only have 3 lbs of H4350 and 1 lb of N140 and we all know how hard powder is to get right now. Luckily there is Lapua brass out there for 125.00 per 100 and I could neck down 308 if necessary I guess. Anyone ever messed with N550 ?

I load 140g Sierra BSPs on top of around 35g (I think) of Varget.

Very good whitetail load.

Im not calling you a liar, if I saw 8in groups from any bullet in any of my guns I'm making sure the barrel isn't bent and my scope is tight.

The most I've ever seen is 3in groups and that's unacceptable to me. Fine for hunting at 100yds but still I want an inch or under.

But you're right, some guns don't like Barnes. I handload so my rifle is a laser beam with them. It's nuts how awesome those bullets are though.

I think interlocks are great for "normal speed" calibers which the 7mm-08 is. I've had great results from them with 6.5x55 (seems to work well with anything) and seen good results in .308 with them.
