Whelen

It's like comparing a 30-30 to a 30-06.

Inside 100 yds it don't make no nevermind. After that go with the Whelen.

For deer both are good out to about 200. The .35 whelen smokes the Remington after that.

They're two different kind of cartridges. The .35 Remington is an old lever action load, the whelen is a fat .30-06

That's like asking which car is better the Corvette or the Chevette. They will both kill a deer no questions asked. I have a 35 Whelen and it hits like a truck. If your are hunting in the woods either will do. IF your shots are 150 yes and up I would go with the Whelen. The 35 Rem is a damn fine round but more like a dressed up .30-30. I wish I had one .

Congrats on the sore shoulder.

I love my 35 Whelen but sighting it in is an experience.

This. And it's really no comparison.

I have an old Marlin 35 rem and it's a great shooting gun. But if i remember correctly, it starts dropping drastically at about 100 yards.

.35 whelen could easily pass for a medium range elk cartridge. It's in a whole different class than .35rem.

Now if I was shopping for a handi rifle to shoot deer with in primitive season, I'd get the Remington. Shooting a light .35 whelen is not fun.

My handi kicks harder than my A bolt 300 WSM. It's not a fun one to shoot.

If shots aren't expected past 150 yards, I'd cast my vote towards the old Rem.
The deer won't know different, but when sighting it in your shoulder WILL.

Assuming you are talking about lightweight rifles such as a handi rifle.

This^^. The 35 Whelen is a lot more power, but the 35 Rem is one of the best short range (inside 150-200 yds) deer rounds. If you get a 35 Remington, start looking for ammo NOW. It's been really hard finding 35 Rem ammo for a while now. I have a special spot in my heart for the 35 Rem as it was the first Contender barrel I used for deer hunting w/ a handgun. I've still got that barrel but haven't shot it in many years.

I throw 500-600 pitches of batting practice a day, and the pain from that isnt even close to shooting a 35 whelen 6 times

Can't be worse than the .45-70 handi rifle. That thing kicks like an angry mule with hornady lever evolution rounds.

theyre almost identical, recoil-wise

similarities end there though. Whelen SMOKES 45-70 and 444

The hornadys do pack a punch. I found that the Winchester 300 gr HP does a fine job with less recoil. My wife hunts with that gun.

I chose 444 because of the recoil.
Yea, I'm a wus.
