The spillway portion of the dam is longer than the intake for the powerhouse. A boat with no power would go wherever the current takes them. I have no idea if the boat went over the spillway or through the powerhouse intake.

That is some angry arse water. I have been on the Black, White, and Cache in AR when the river is rolling. Things can go bad in a hurry in these conditions. I still cant believe it took someone 24 hours to determine they were missing. Sad story for sure.

Why in the hell were they in the in the water that close to a dam with all the rain we've had the last month.

Terrible terrible decision to be in the water right now.

Wife just sent me a msg from her mom (who lives at Pickwick) saying the boat was found upside down at the bridge in Savannah 16 miles downstream.

Is it possible they went through the locks to fish south of dam then had an accident?

There is video showing the occupants in the boat as it went into the dam. Terrible deal.

Same thing happened to a guy on a float tube while duck hunting lake Seminole. They found the body 27 miles down the Apalachicola River. I saw video of the lake that day and couldn’t fathom what they were thinking going duck hunting that day.

Damn that's terrible.

Always have an anchor and 3x the max depth of rope at least, especially when you're somewhere potentially dangerous.

Gonna have to make a call tomorrow to verify. Won't end up here though, not worth it.

Darn, terrible for the families.

Hopefully some people will learn to take more precautions and stay away from the dams when fishing. It always blows my mind how many get right on top them to catch fish.

A boat with 3 or 4 students from Northwood high school in Mooringsport went over the spillway in 1983/4. Two of them brothers... older one was able to cling onto an edge of a piling. They eventually saved him. I will always remember his screams for his brother as they were getting to him.

I still pray for those guys from time to time. Tragic situation for the families.

Seems unlikely they were fishing by the damn but maybe broke down on the way back to the ramp? I mean with the water so high and moving so fast doesn't seem like the fishing there would make sense? How deep is it there? As said you could drop an anchor, but many bass boats only have like 30-50ft of anchor line and it may have been 100+ ft there? Hell its not hard for a damn to be 200 ft but that doesn't look like its the case there? Yeah I'd guess the trolling motor was useless.

Just seems crazy with 3 of them they couldn't call someone to come and help them. As soon as they had motor issues they should have been on the horn, using flares, etc. Very sad story.

Also, if all 3 had life jackets is it not possible one may have survived? Its not that far of a fall I mean if they went over the spillway?

I'm still frustrated it took them a day to realize the boat was missing

That seems to me like those on the boat never used their phone at all then right? Two teenagers and a dad most likely, no emergency call? Is it possible they flipped the boat or something like that and were in the water when they went over? Maybe hauling arse back to the ramp, hit a wave, flipped, and then rode the current over the damn?

Possibly for a little bit but the water temp is probably in the 50’s. Dam Guide would be able to tell better than I, but regardless if someone hits the water, they wouldn’t last long.

Life jackets would have made it easier to recover. I know it’s more extreme temperatures here but you never see anyone without them. I wasn’t paying attention on a trip last year and had mine off for about 30 minutes before I realized it. The next day a buddy called me up and said he saw me out and it looked like I wasn’t wearing a life jacket. He just wanted to give me a friendly reminder.

I have gotten now where I usually just keep a float coat on. Just be careful out there.

The boaters reportedly experienced engine trouble before the start of the competition and did not leave the dock with the rest of the competitors. According to Watkins, it was believed the team took the boat out of the water and went home, but it was later determined they attempted to compete.

“We had visual confirmation of the three on the boat entering the (Pickwick) dam with a camera in the spillway,” said Amy Snider-Spencer, spokesperson for Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said. “That was between 8 and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.”
