There are 3 boaters missing on Pickwick Lake (TN River)

they were fishing a high school fishing tournament.
2 competitors and a chaperone.

Apparently they were having engine trouble and thought to have left when they didn't show up at the weigh in.
Boat was found this morning below the dam (was sucked through).

Hate to hear this stuff. The river it pretty dangerous right now with the amount of water they are pulling through.

That is absolutely horrible to hear. I have dozens of friends that fish Pickwick weekly. I know they are pulling an unbelievable amount of water through there right now, and of course it's raining again today. Prayers sent for all involved.

Yeah heard about this at the morning meeting, tough. Hope they got out before it went through. We been finding too many bodies this year.

Man, that would be a terrible way to go watching as it sucks you closer and closer and having no control over it. I assume you bail out at some point, but I'm sure then it's probably too late to swim against the current. Horrible deal..

That sucks. Anytime it is pulling more than 150,000 through the dam that current rolling. I think they were pulling through 300k. On Friday. They dropped the river from 218 (214 summer pool) to 208 in a matter of a couple days. When the current is rolling like that best option is to stay off the main lake or go to Bay Springs lake about 40 minutes south of Yellow Creek area of Pickwick. Good largemouth fishing

The worst is they didn't even know they were missing until late afternoon the next day. The director should have been more organized than that.

They called off the search due to weather and water conditions. I imagine they think this is a recovery now and likely won't find the bodies until the lake and river go down. What a tragic situation for these families.

The drowning victim they recovered about a week ago in the TN river was found 120 miles downstream from where he was reported missing. Reported missing in Chattanooga, TN and found 19 days later in Guntersville, AL

"The director should have been more organized than that."

This was just an inner club tournamnet among the one high school team. There are still so many questions.

If they had motor issues, would they not have had cell phones? Is service that bad? It seems unlikely to me that they won’t over a damn in a boat with a broken motor and didn’t call anyone? Or no one was around to help them? Was the water running fast enough the trolling motor wouldn’t work even sideways to escape the damn or is it possible they were fishing so close to it they didn’t have time once the motor stopped to escape?

Even more reason for a coach/organizer to make sure all parties are accounted for. And where was the truck/trailer?

270K cubic ft/sec it was running.

spotlock aint holding in that.

Launch is so close to the dam

The 24 hour thing sucks, I don't see how it went that long in this day and age.

I’m just going to put this out as a PSA. Garmin Inreach devices are something every outdoors person should consider. Mine stays with me anytime I’m out. Please consider these for yourself and your family.

We actually found a body at Nickajack Dam a week or so before that thinking it was this person that jumped off a bridge in Chattanooga. Nope, they went through Nickajack and got to Guntersville.

My thoughts also, if this was a small tourney the truck/trailer should’ve been a givaway they didn’t leave early. Recovery efforts for 15 year olds suck.

Problem is you don't go over Pickwick, you get sucked through it by huge turbines. The way the river has been running for the last month due to the torrential amounts of rain we are getting there is no way to fight the current once sucked in. All the tournament guys I know have had all their scheduled tournaments cancelled for the last month. I find it hard to believe that this high school tournament wasn't cancelled.

I imagine they went through the spillway gate not the turbine.

That's not correct, they would have been pulled through the opened gates

Not entirely accurate, some stuff can go through the turbines, I can't remember if pickwick has trash racks or not. Body found at Nickajack was found at the intake.

Much more likely to go through the spillway gates right now since we have so many open at the dams right now.
