2WD vs 4WD

I'm going to buy a new truck later this year. I don't see myself going off road anywhere as I don't hunt, but would like to get a small boat for fishing. I haven't owned a truck in about 20 yrs but am finally able to get one.
Are there any advantages for someone who lives in DFW to have a 4WD over a 2WD?

No one ever “NEEDS” 4x4 until they do

I have owned three full sized trucks. First was 4wd. I almost never used it, and never once used it to pull my boats ( bass and bay) out of the water. Second was 2wd. Never regretted it. 3rd, 2wd. Doing fine even on a slippery ramp known for spin outs. Get limited slip differential.

Even if I only fished I would still want a 4x4. I won’t by a 2wd truck unless is a classic truck like a 72 Chevy.

I'm leaning toward a Tacoma, but am going to enjoy the experience and test drive everything starting this summer. I'll probably buy in December unless something happens to my car before that. I also like the Ram trucks since the are a good combination of size/affordability. I'm not a big person, so I can't see me getting a full size 4WD in any model.

I assume the reason for the question is cost.
Also,
If that’s all, consider an SUV like a highlander/pilot/pathfinder.
These can easily double as your daily use/commute truck with the gas mileage. I can also fit all three kids and the wife.
My pathfinder (though the cvt is shite) gets 26 mpg. Get the extended warranty.
Can pull a small boat.
Has 4wd for an extra 2g only.
Also, the VW atlas awd is coming down in price.
Traverse/Explorer/Durango are too high for my taste.

Or even better - a locker for 2WD if you're going to be on wet boat ramps.
4WD is all but useless if you are never going to be off pavement, gravel or even hard packed dirt. If you're never in soft-soil or traversing broken/uneven terrain, you'll never "need" 4WD, IMHO.
(ETA: Particularly full size trucks and even 3/4 Ton - they're so heavy, you're begging for trouble getting into the shite with them. Unless it's a purpose built overland vehicle, you want to be as light as possible with a 4WD off-road.)

If you haven’t owned a truck in 20 yrs, I doubt you’ll find yourself in need of a 4x4 suddenly.

How long to you keep your vehicles?
If you plan on keeping it for only 5 years or so get the 4wd
I’m big on resale value. A 4x4 will have better resale value and typically it is more that the extra expense up the upfront cost for that option.

If you are lifting it and putting on Super Swampers better get 4wd

Somewhat. I can afford the 4WD, just not sure I will ever need it so what's the point in spending the extra money for a feature that I'll never use. I'm sure it will depend on what's on the lot since everything is a package these days and you don't have much variability/choices.

Wife has a 2016 Highlander (paid off ) and I want a truck. It sucks having to make multiple trips to Lowe's to get soil, mulch, etc.
This is definitely a want purchase more so than a need purchase. I've been stuck driving cars for 20 yrs and want a truck.

As long as needed, but I will keep this one at least 15 yrs.

I'm definitely not that guy. (not that there is anything wrong with that)

All wheel drive, is not the same as four wheel drive, and is only useful on icy roads.

Does Toyota still make the Tacoma prerunner? If so the TRD package on RWD had a locking rear differential, or at least it’s was available
Posted on 4/12/20 at 9:56 am to Philzilla2k
I don't think so. I think their packages are: base, LTD, TRD (off road & Pro), and Limited.

Having 4WD instantly makes your dick bigger.

DFW area gets a fair amount of snow & ice, and 4wd will come in handy for that. If you haven’t owned a truck for a while, you may have been driving a fwd car, vs rwd.

This is true. I dont go off road and I rarely get to hunt anymore as there are no ducks to shoot. I have a 2WD truck. Bogged it in my yard last weekend because my neighbor drained his fricking pool into my yard while I wasn't home. I had to be pulled out. That being said, I still don't think I NEED a 4WD.
