if you're interested in picking up a .22 for rodents, snakes, outdoor small animals, etc, with very sparing usage: would you favor a revolver type or semi type. .22 is not in my expertice and just wanted opinions from you guys. Appears semi auto's may have a bit more issue with the type of round v a revolver?? Please educate. Much appreciated.

I've got a few 22lrs.

My problem with the revolver is capacity and reloading.

If I were looking for 1 it would likely be the buckmark. Very accurate and can get a couple extra mags to keep on hand. Also, I've never had an issue with my buckmark. In my experience it's more of they type of ammo that causes issues in 22lr, not the action of the gun.

Definitely a revolver. It won’t jam and will shoot any 22lr ammo you can find.

semi-auto. you cant suppress 99.9% of revolvers.

Buckmark as previously said. Not as loud as a revolver, more accurate IMO and holds more rounds.

Ruger Single Six is the answer you are looking for, CB round, ratshot, all of it shoots well.

Since you said "Sparing usage" I would say a revolver. Now if you do plan on plinking as well then I would agree with the buckmark. I have an older .22 revolver I carry in the early season when doing fields and such. I have never had to reload in the field and I don't need to worry about the dust and such with a revolver. Like said it will shoot ANY ammo.

Got any leads? Got some on backorder that might come in next fall. I can't find any in stock anywhere.

I love my $199 Ruger Wrangler revolver.

The drawback is no suppressor and only six shots. But it’s easy to reload, accurate enough, and solid as a hammer. And I don’t have a suppressor anyway Bc the government makes it such a PITA to get one.

Agreed. Big Daddy Gov makes it entirely to difficult. However, it is much easier than most people think it is to get and I encourage everyone to get one.

There is no reason suppressors shouldn't be an off-the-shelf item.

If I didn’t have my Single Six, I’d buy a Ruger Wrangler.

I have some old POS looking revolver that my grandpa had. Not sure why he had it, and it is a pain to reload, but it always works with any ammo, and I've taken care of a few pests over the years with it. I used to have a Ruger semi auto, but just never shot it enough to keep it. Ended up trading it in when I was getting a 9mm for carrying.

My grandad's nickel .22 revolver is 9 shot so it kinda negates the ammo vs semi auto to an extent. It's an old H&R 927 (Harrington and Richardson, 927 stamped on the barrel but can't find online listing for the model)

I have a super old colt peacemaker single action chambered in 22 my dad gave me. Its not one of the "replicas"
Came with a western holster and everything.

I bring it all the time to the lease and load with rat shot.

I just took it to requalify for my CHP

I love it.

This is the best answer, because you said

I have several semiautos. Not the Buckmark people are suggesting, but I have a Ruger Mk II, which is just as popular and reliable. Also have a High Standard Sportking, a Beretta 21A and a S&W 22A.

No matter how great the pistol is, you have to consider the AMMO. 22lr is rimfire, which is going to be a lot more unreliable than a centerfire cartridge. Even with the cheap steel 9mm, I haven't got a dud yet. But with various bulk 22, I have occasionally had a FTF.

OP mentioned 'snakes'... the last thing you want to do with a poisonous snake is to have a misfire. At least with a DA revolver, you can just pull the trigger again; with any semiauto pistol you have to rack the slide.

I have an old H&R Sportsman, 9 shot cylinder. You can't go wrong with something like that.

Ruger single six convertible is the only answer there is IMO. You can shoot everything from ratshot to .22 magnum.

Or if you just want .22 lr, a ruger wrangler is like $200 and will also shoot any .22 lr ammo reliably and accurately.

Semi auto .22's are pretty unreliable without the right ammo. They're fun, just not very reliable.
