I hunted the dog days of hunting in La too. Went years without seeing a deer in the 70’s and early 80’s.
La deer are much more plentiful now.We see deer almost every hunt these days.

I hunt in MS where there are 1.75 million deer, yet all people could talk about last year during the bumper crop of acorns was how no one was seeing anything and numbers must be down.

I hunt in area 4 a good bit too and haven’t shot a buck on this particular lease yet. 17” minimum beam length bucks in a St Helena pine plantation appear to be elusive, so I’m good with 2 does and all the pigs that give me a shot.

Believe it or not, a ton of people want to shoot big bucks. They spend money feeding supplements, plant food plots, travel to different public lands across the state and even across the country to try and kill a good buck. The only way to really grow big bucks is for them to survive and mature. Fewer buck tags doesn’t just limit the amount of bucks shot, it makes people more selective.

The other two guys said they want more opportunity, which means higher deer density and overall lower quality of bucks.

One less buck tag is catering to both.
I also don’t think it impacts the total number of deer in the state as much as people think, considering more bucks doesn’t mean more fawns and most people are not completely tagging out of deer every year anyway.

If your buck/doe ratio is right the rut is shorter which means the fawns all hit the ground at the same time. More fawns will end up surviving to adulthood if that happens. Predators cant kill as many before they're big enough to have a better chance at getting away.

A lot of Louisiana folks go out of town to kill a good buck only to shoot the first 14” 8 point they see

Believe it or not, I think some people hang their hat on how shitty it is here. If everyone that bought a big game license in Louisiana would kill just 3 deer we would have zero deer left. Yet the limit is 6 and we have 80-90 day gun seasons. It makes zero sense.

Yet we are still probably at or close to all time high deer numbers for the state.
Some areas that experienced latter flooding events or other issues may be down (and they are being addressed) with lower limits and shortened seasons but overall we are as good as ever

I couldn’t disagree more. Theres a decent population of deer in this state.
