Everyone wants to talk about the good old days but honestly for deer hunting in Louisiana the good ol days are right now Turkey and ducks and all that may have passed but we have more deer now than we probably had when Boudreaux first got here
You don’t realize how crappy deer hunting used to be. Talk to an old timer and see. That’s why they dog hunted. The deer were so sparse they needed dogs to find them
And if you shot a doe you were the scum of the earth

I remember hunting the swamp behind our house and not seeing tracks let alone a deer.
Now there’s a decent herd back there.
Same with where I occasionally hunt now in swamp in south La.
North La is nuts the amount of deer they have.

Negative, we used to have a million deer in the late '90s and early 2000s. It dropped to around 400,000. We might be up to a half a million now.

We are nowhere near close to carrying capacity in 90% of this state

No dude, they dog hunted them until there was nothing left.
Kisatchie has rebounded since the dogs went away, and now all the dog people or clamoring to get in there to kill everything.

Hunting 100 years ago must’ve sucked.

Yes, my grandfather who was born in Union Parish in 1923 didn't shoot a deer until ~1960. Squirrels & rabbits were pretty much the only game in town lol. Maybe some quail back then too

I hear ya. My grandfather said he didn’t see a deer until the early 1930’s, and it was a dead one tied to the rear bumper of a car. He thought it was some kind of crazy-horned goat.

Haha that's funny. I'm sure you have heard this old saying as many of us did. When someone saw a deer track it was the talk of the town back in the day.

Entirely off topic, but the biggest shed I’ve ever found was along black lick creek in Kisatchie NF right outside of Dry Prong. All the tines had been chewed off by rodents but the sheer weight of that right side was mind boggling. There’s some serious bucks cruising that area.

5 deer are PLENTY.....you cant fit 5 deer in normal freezer space....who eats 5 deer per year?
Maybe your freezer. I try to get at least three a year, plus our heifer we fatten up, then three hogs. Plus whatever else we end up with like fish, shrimp, whatever. We have four freezers, some of us live differently. We eat it, haven’t bought meat at the grocery in ages.
I need to get 6 off this year, we have way too many on the property. We have others who help us throughout the year, we’ve all agreed to take more this season.
