I was blessed the past two years to travel to Denmark a lot for work. One of my main colleagues was Swedish. Two things I learned:

1. The Scandinavians love their hockey.
2. They hate the USA team.

This feels extra good.

Why do they hate Team USA?

Awesome game. Hoping Finland can beat Canada, but part of me wants us to whoop Canada for the Gold. Finland is really good too.

Still wish we had selected Jason Robertson to be a part of this team.

I think Sweden was a tougher out than Slovakia will be.

Will be more of the same in the gold medal game. USA has won the last 5 meetings and every single one of them have been absolute slaughters. They are head and shoulders above everyone else right now.

We’re just easy to hate because we literally run the world in every aspect. Politically, financially, culturally (music, entertainment, etc.)

They love to hate but would swap spots in a second.

Traveling over there made me more proud to be an American. We truly are blessed.

What a freaking game.

I realize the game plan was to grind it out and not give Sweden an easy goal but that might have been too conservative.

Need to beat Slovakia, who is on a roll.

Slovakia hardly worries me. Their most-used goaltender plays in the AHL, they have seven players on NHL rosters. USA needs to push and be more aggressive (within reason) on offense. Felt like they were more about playing not to lose today. Should silence the dummies in the "they played nobody" crowd.

It was very rewarding to watch the faces of the Sweden fans. They were not happy at all.

Missed the game today, but just watched the highlights. If you watched it, I'm sure there's a lot of drama missing. I will say that 8 minute clip seems to capture how tight and gritty the game had to have been. I'd embed it, but it looks like it's restricted.

That was a heck of a game

Also not upset that Canada won. It wouldn’t feel right to win the gold without having to beat Canada.

It was WAY too conservative in the third period, and that had to be all on Mike Sullivan. I don't think the players would choose to hold themselves back like that.

The first period was pretty even, but team USA owned the second period. It could have been 4 or 5 to nothing going into the third if not for Markstrom playing uncharacteristically well. It just felt like the flood gates were ready to burst open in that third period if we could carry that momentum and get a quick goal, but instead it was dump and change, dump and change, all period. I kept saying to myself "Sullivan is treating this game like it's 3 or 4 to nothing, and trying not to make mistakes, and it's going to cost us". Sure enough, it did... At least temporarily. A one goal lead is not something you sit on like a mother hen.

But you saw what happened as soon as there wasn't a lead to desperately cling to, and the guys were allowed to play free again. They immediately started hounding the offensive zone in the last minute and a half of regulation, and then totally dominated overtime, just like they dominated the second period. If Mike Sullivan ever tries that conservative approach again without a sufficient lead to justify it, Bill Guerin should call down to the bench and inform him that he's fired, and one of the assistants will coach the rest of the game and tournament. You've got a team full of super stars, and that's how you want to tell them to close a game?

If it sounds like I'm not excited about the win, believe me, I am very excited and proud of the team. I'm just mad that our coach almost got us eliminated. I hope he learned a lesson, and that the players all rallied together and said "coach, let us win the game, instead of trying not to lose".
