That means they got one hell of a lot of mud down there, then, while they were pumping. Isn't that good news?
well the other news reports are saying too much is escaping

Is this starting to sound like another failed idea?

Whose side are you on?

My guess, and I stress that word, is that they stopped pumping to find out how long before oil starts coming out again. That tells them how much mud they were able to force down the well. From that they can figure out how long to pump the second time before they need to start cementing.
Anybody with an actual clue, feel free to correct me.

I think, and this is a guess, too, that they have to have it static to pump cement.

I dont have an actual clue but it seems like this is exactly what BP was saying.

Take this totally for what it's worth. CNN saying BP has stopped mudd pumping and will no do a small junk shot to stop up riser a bit. Thus they will partially stop up riser and increase the ratio of mud going down hole.

That would seem to make sense.

"Nothing has actually gone wrong or unanticipated," Doug Suttles, the company's chief operating officer, told reporters. He said engineers have been monitoring the process for the past 24 hours, and determining adjustments to the mud-like fluid being injected into the line to counter to flow of oil. He said the next step will be to restock the drilling fluid and restart in the evening.

Seems like another long shot. Using two 3 inch feed pipes (kill and choke lines) to transfer enough "junk" material to plug the holes in a much larger diameter pipe. Let's hope they don't plug the kill and choke line inlet at the BOP.
I wonder if it would be feasible to just continue pumping mud until the relief well is completed? At least the mud overcomes the oil pressure some thereby reducing the oil leak rate. I don't even know if that much mud is available.

CNN seems pretty pissed that BP hasnt told anyone for the past 16 hours that the pumping had stopped.

Just thinking about the ROV placing the wrench in riser hole. Maybe it was a way to measure what size particles they need to plug holes with junk. If it was a 1 inch wrench it would give scale to hole size.

How dare BP not kowtow to CNN's need for something to put on cable. How dare they let CNN put on the endless talking heads, full of speculation, and some with their own agendas that are blatantly obvious. How dare they put well control over the needs and wants of the cable media.

Valid point.

Isn't that the only way to do a junk shot, ever?
Posted on 5/27/10 at 5:40 pm to JudgeHolden
I don't know. Maybe they mean they will inject the junk shot directly into the riser and not use the 3 inch feed pipes. I really don't know.

So what exactly is going on right now on the live feed?

What looks to me like drilling mud is spewing out of at least 4 openings in the riser.

I've been looking at a robot installing what looks like a gauge--definitely not the riser.
