re: Links to live feeds from remotely operated vehicles (ROV)

I think the existing operation is futile. I don't see how closing the four valves on top make the leak wrapping around the bottom lip any less. 1,000 bbl per day recovery is a joke. I don't see how they are going to recover much more than that without a tight seal as was originally planned.
They need to reinstall the diamond wire saw to get the smooth cut and use the LMRP with the elastomer seal if they are relying on pressure gradient to flow to the ship.

why is everything they do "tomorrow or in the next 24-48 hours" this is so frustrating. in the meantime our coast is getting destoyed and all the things that go along with it. PEOPLE

It is just a 'dog and pony' show so that they can tell Obama that they have started to recover some of the oil since he is visiting. I bet that is why tjey didn't finish the job as planned with the diamond wire saw. It makes me sick to the stomach.
Why is Obama going back to Grand Isle? They need to get him to Venice where the heavy oil slicks are at the mouth of the river.

it is very frustrating, but if you have been watching the live feeds you would see why everything takes so long down there.
Doing anything with those ROV's is very slow.

All I've seen is footage of idle ROV's looking at barrel after barrel of oil leaking out.

agreed...they have not done shite today

I was thinking the same thing. After 45 days, what's another 12 hours? If they have to go back to it now, it will have cost them 48 hours or more...... Geez.

What's the lyrics to that old Jim Croce tune?
"Don't tug on Supermans cape"
"Don't piss into the wind"

You don't pull the mask off the old lone Ranger and you don't mess around with Jim.

I'm going back in my memory banks and trying to recall if I ever heard that tune sober?

All day they've been pumping dispersants into the steam, does anyone know if this is the new safer dispersant or are they still using the original stuff that is supposed to be so bad for the environment.

is it possible to unbolt the flange just below the cut and bolt in a new flange with something to attach a high pressure hose to? if not could the top hat slide down to seal against the edge of the flange instead of trying to seal against the cut section of pipe?
Sorry if already discussed, I only have limited access time.
Really appreciate all the info guys.

Pretty sure that's the same stuff that the EPA told them to cut back on.

I just watched the animation everyone was posting last night about how the cap was supposed to work. The part that confuses me is according to that animation, with the valves closed the oil should be leaking out of the topof the cap. But watching the live feeds, it looks like the oil is coming out of the bottom. Is this due to a lack of seal on the connection?

Same dispersant. Government told them to find an alt less toxic dispersant and to stop using this one after another day. BP could find nothing better to use so they were told they could resume its use.
Personally I think media is making a mountain out of a mole hill with the dispersant issue. The countries that have banned it have banned it not because it was found to be to toxic but banned because test on the toxicity in its use have not been done.
It is just a freaking degreaser/soap.

Removal of the top flange on the BOP has been mentioned but some challenges (which I dont' know the answers to) are 1) can the ROVs unbolt studs with enough torque under water at these depths? 2) as soon as you start unbolting, oil will come out below where you are unbolting so visibility may be reduced to nothing.
I haven't been watching too much today but is seems as though not much going on today. I hope they are continuing to work on the choke / kill takeoff lines to the other vessel (not the Enterprise). That will help relieve some capacity off the Enterprise, but they have to develop a pressure gradient via a somewhat tight seal. Otherwise, the oil / gas is going to take the path of least resistance out of the bottom of the gap in the top hat. There is the pressure drop in the recovery riser at the flowrate the oil / gas will flow and then the head that needs to be developed to get the oil / gas above the the water surface up and into the ship. Right now, if they are not pumping, most likely they are just getting two phase flow and the gas is entraining the oil into the Enterprise ship without a tight seal at the bottom.
It was also posted that the Enterprise can only handle 15,000 bbl / day. "What - If" the flow exceeds that to the Enterprise under a totally sealed system since no one really knows what the leak size is? How much of a safety concern is that? Can they throttle the flow?
So many questions and not enough answers from BP.
Just seems that they are content with dragging things out until the relief wells are complete and just attempting something until then just to show that they are attempting something.
