The other question unanswered with unbolting the top of the BOP is once they start taking out bolts and the pressure starts pushing up against it, the other bolts will even harder to take out.

Does anyone know how the BOP failed? Reason I ask is because one circumstance I read was that the drill pipe in the BOP caused the valves to fail. Now that they have the riser pipe cut off couldn't the drill pipe be removed allowing the valves to continue operation. I know this seems like an obvious solution and if it could work they would have done it by now...just looking to better understand the situation.

Go back a few pages and there was a pretty good post by redstick speculating on what failed and why the BOP rams didn't close.

Seems like you could clamp it together with some sort of C Clamp, remove the bolts then unclamp it.

I normally don't watch CNN, but to their credit in my opinion, they have covered this far better than their competitors.

They have just reported that the BP idiot CEO is going to transfer oversight of this tragic mess to an American board member/officer.

I have enjoyed CNN broadcasting of this disaster. Sure beat Fox's Spill baby Spill mantra they've been touting with Palin.

Yes CNN has been the best of the big media on this. No other channel is even close. Even so, even they continue to put out false and misleading information.

They are the freaking news media you would think that they would educate thereselves on what they are reporting on since they are the ones explaining all this to most of the public.

To be honest, other than today, the CNN coverage that I have watched has been Anderson Cooper at 8PM Mountain time.

They all suffer from the "trying to be first to get it on air" syndrome, often at the expense of accuracy.

Solution.

Make a ring out of the fire resistant booms that they have. Get a couple of big weights and attach a almost mile long tarp of some sort. Roll of plastic??? doens't matter. This should be easy enough to get straight from a textile company or whoever depending on the type of material. Place it on one side of the BOP and it would be like one long roll of toilet paper stretching from the gulf floor to the near the surface. Do this over and over (maybe 4 to 10 times) until you have the BOP surrounded. Periodically tie the sides of the WALLS together. The more ties the less leakage.

This will funnel the oil to the surface in a much more concentrated spot where they could burn or skim the majority of the oil immediately.

They should be able to collect at least half of the oil before it has a chance to spread?

What ya think?

All the cameras are off. Are they watching the end of the game or something?

Interesting idea and definitely thinking "outside the box". You would have to have rings at some interval all the way up the curtain to keep it from collapsing on itself. Furthermore, water is very heavy. Ever try to push a surf board flat against the surf? There is a lot of resistance to a flat surface over a wide area. The underwater currents may also be in different directions at different depths which if you could even hang enough weight to hold it down would tend to want to stretch, collapse on itself, get tangled up, and shred the curtain to smithereens.

Just my opinion, but good to be thinking about abstract ideas.

Yeah probably wouldn't work but you would think some variation of this could be made to do better than what has been going on for over a month now.

CNN is slowly, but surely creeping up on Fox News, mainly because of AC.

I really enjoy the format of AC360

On Topic - what are they doing now? Is there too much pressure to close off the cap completely?

Not sure what they are doing now except trying to get more up to the recovery ship Enterprise on the surface.

Here is a video link from CNN on what they are reporting. Not sure if this guy knows what he is talking about.

I'm confused because the video talks about slots and I thought there were valves on top of the top hat???

This entire event has been less than transparent in every way.

Those bolts are probably made to not come off so the only option would be to cut them off. That would be common sense. I have to think there is another reason the old riser flange could not be removed. At least I hope so.
