It is an engineering marvel. And I do give all the engineers, ROV ops, laborers, etc. involved all the credit in the world. However, I think BP execs are going to spin this as more of a solution than it really is.

If oil wasn't coming out the top and the bottom then you would know that something bad was happening. Since that isn't the case (oil is spewing) that is a good sign. Doesn't tell the tale, but it all looks good so far.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm so damn desparate for a faint glimmer of hope or a morsel of good news. I'm going to pop the top on another beer and continue to watch and listen.

I don't think the pipe is connected to the ship yet. The picture on Enterprise ROV 1 is showing oil coming out of the top of the LMRP assembly. Looks to me like the pipe to the ship will connect to that. Just a WAG...

The plan was approved by the Department of Interior. Surely you don't suggest our government could make a mistake?

Haha no not suggesting the government has anything but the best plans. "Hey Barack, how bout we just blow it up. Ahhh, good idea get me some sharks with fricken laser beams who can carry a nuke. Good idea sir."

The animation said they would be pumping nitrogen gas down the pipe to prevent seawater from entering the pipe until it was placed on the riser. I would think that would mean it is attached to the ship.

It may be designed to work like a gas lift system where a series of valves are located all the way up to allow the lighter gas and oil to migrate up gradually displacing the heavier water.

If my post above is correct, that tells me that oil is flowing through the pipe with no ice so far

I love the avatar. Bobby could get this shite capped. Or get thrown out of the control room for trying.

Are any of the feeds showing the top hat right now. Can't tell.
Posted on 6/3/10 at 9:25 pm to redstick13
I did read on MSN that they say it will take 12 to 24 hrs to know if success is there. THat could be the time for permanent connection to the vessel above.
I would think to be able to raise and lower the top hat, there could NOT be a rigid pipe to the ship in place yet. So I gues we need surface cameras now!!

that gas lift idea would explain why the one ROV kept viewing a line of what looked like valves earlier in the day. redstick you're obviously very knowledgeable, what is your background?

Thanks. I'm pissed that I missed the top hat going on. Ive been watching these feeds all day.
Posted on 6/3/10 at 9:27 pm to the LSUSaint
Saint: the top hat was on the ocean floor before the cutting work started. They lowered and attached the LMRP structure to it before moving it over the BOP, from what I understand. So we're waiting on oil and gas to get to the surface right now.
I could be wrong, but I hope not.
