The zipper merge is only helpful if all the cars are already stopped because they are going to all be stopped once it begins.

There is no such thing as “taking advantage” of a zipper merge. There is the right way - driving all the way to the merge point and using all available highway - and the wrong way.

Correct, if traffic is moving at posted speed or close to it, which indicates the one lane hasn't reached maximum capacity. Once it does reach capacity and speeds slow, then zipper becomes more efficient. Some states, not Louisiana, use smart signage to tell drivers which is more efficient given the current conditions of traffic.

The worst though are the ones that are constant and everyone knows about. Like Bluebonnet by the Mall of Louisiana. The third lane is always under utilized causing traffic to back up thru multiple signals. Tough guys in this thread are the reason.

This is exactly the way to do it. And it's also why I won't jump in that lane to block cars from getting past me. That dick move just adds to the problem.

I always merge,
I never surge,
When I am fighting traffic,
Now I might curse,
Or slur, (or worse)
My language rather graphic,

Though these hours leave me sour,
I can manage still a smile,
For for all of my frustrations,
I have made it half a mile

Nothing worse than getting my ball sack stuck in my zipper.

Zipper merging 15% more efficient. Proven by science. You morons go ahead and continue using one lane.

For those who do not but the above----

For the life of me I can't imagine how folks arrive at the conclusion that "there is a lane closure ahead for some reason therefore it is reasonable to close that lane for its entire length as soon as any portion of it is closed for any reason". It is beyond stupid but people will do it and will block the lane if given half a chance to do so. Multiple lane highways exist to facilitate passing slower moving traffic AND higher volumes of vehicles. The volume of vehicles is constant, the lanes to accommodate them are constant until one is closed. What is not constant is the miles of open lane leading up to the closed lane IF some a-hole is blocking it to keep people from "cutting the line".

If everyone in a line of traffic at a lane closure would provide one car length of space to allow cars in the second lane to merge traffic would flow at an amazingly efficient rate. Everybody getting in one lane miles from the closure is idiotic. Breaking your neck to prevent someone from "cutting the line" because they are not stupid like you and did not get in the open lane miles from the obstruction is the reason traffic slows down. There are ample studies to prove it....but keep on preventing people from using lanes of traffic because you are too stupid to do so...it works so well

No one is cutting into a line they are utilizing ALL lanes of traffic as they were designed to be used. How far back should the second or more lane be shunned by polite drivers? I would posit that there is never a minute of the day that there is not a lane closure somewhere on every interestate in the US. Lets say there is on on I-10 in Souther California. Should everybody in fricking Louisiana stay out of that lane so they don't cut the line? Who close is too close? 500 Miles? 50 miles? 10? 1/4??? There are multiple lanes, use them all until they are closed. That is the smart thing to do...

the problem is some assholes start the merge 1'4 mile early making the ones that go ahead to where the merge should take place look like assholes

The problem with a zipper merge is that all value of it goes away with the first car that has to stop to look for an opening to come in.

Now the window needed is even wider to squeeze in, causing even more of a disruption and reduced flow.

This. I'm not merging a 1/2 mile before the lane closure, but I'm also not the a-hole that hauls arse to the end of the lane and then almost causes a wreck squeezing in.

If the sign says left or right lane closed ahead, a half mile before, wtf you aren't merging? I've blocked the shoulder a mile ahead because of assholes. Keep traffic moving. You'll zipper merge after I get going.

Everyone merging a mile ahead doesn't do this at all. It causes a single lane back up.

IF and that'd a big IF people would drive correctly and use all available space and keep one car length between them so lanes can merge at the merge point, then traffic would keep moving but assholes like you refuse to allow that to happen. So we have stopped trqffic

Biggest problem with zipper merge in Baton Rouge is the traffic is usually backed up for blocks before you get to the merge. So the process doesn't work.

This happens before the Mobile Tunnel on I-10E. Alot of frickers merge over at least 1 mile ahead of the merge leaving the right hand lane wide open

I will let one car in per zipper merge rules. But that is it. Why won't the car behind the car I let in try and get in behind me?

Contrary to popular belief it is often the merging cars fault for getting too greedy.

I see that the zipper works very well in St Tammany, so there is some ray of hope for the rest of the state.
As to me personally, not battling over a single place in a long line. It really will not affect my arrival time anyway.
