If I’m paying 23m for a beachfront house I don’t want to see another person or house. It better be a private beach

Can I ask a serious, non trolling question here without getting flamed?
How do people talk themselves into tying up a large percentage of their net worth in a down payment and eaglry agree to be a debt slave for 30 years?
I’m a life long renter because I can’t stomach dropping a massive amount of money on a home. In today’s economy, staying in one place for 20-30 years just seems unrealistic; i feel like you always need to be flexible and ready to move to where the jobs are at any time. In my entire life I’ve never lived in one place for longer than 6 years, so the idea of tying myself to one place and being on the hook to the bank until I’m ~50 freaks me out.
Not to mention all the shite that goes wrong with owning a home (plumbing, A/C, appliances etc.)

I have wasted hours lately on Zillow searching properties I will never buy in or around the Chatahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia.
One can dream of different times and circumstances in life.
Yeah I keep a small running list of "options of I win the lottery" on Zillow. Never will happen, but a fun way to kill an hour every now and then

So you prefer to pay even more money to have someone else gain equity?
That is the best time to own a home. Relocation benefits are great. I relocated once for a job and I made out well.

I don't even look at the types of properties folks here are posting. I'm looking for stuff I could possibly afford at some point in future.

Buying a house isn’t the move it used to be. If you can afford it and want it, definitely do it. But unless you live somewhere that rent is through the roof, it isn’t so bad anymore to rent.

I’ll try to post a link on mobile, but this guy makes a pretty good case.

If you read to the end he recommends owning a house. The investment aspect of it isn't fully discussed. If the option is to spend $300k on a house or invest in stocks. It is pretty clear which will have a better ROI. If the option is to buy a $300k house or take $300k and put it in the fireplace and light it on fire (i.e. rent) then it is clear as day what has a better ROI.
Buying a house is not the better choice 100% of the time but it is the vast majority of the time. If you work in a professional industry that provides relocation then it is almost always the better choice.
