Youth Sports (and their parents) are out of control

Buddy of mine is working a youth soccer tournament in Atlanta this weekend. He’s a former FIFA and PRO referee and a current CONCACAF and USSF National referee. On his game today, a player for a Tennessee club called the GK from the other team a porch monkey (yes, the GK is black) and on the field next to his, there was a mass confrontation between parents where a gun was pulled. Just ridiculous.

The strangest part of that story is that someone brought a gun to a soccer game.

Idiot parents have been a part of youth sports since its inception.
When I was a kid, they served beer on tap at the Concession stand.
The parents would get hammered and fight in the parking lot after the game was over (sometimes), but then again, I get up in Kenner in the late 70's early 80's.
Competition brings out the worst in some people.

This is an official who does not normally work youth matches. In fact, PRO specifically bars their officials from working youth matches unless it’s at the U19 level and only for certain leagues. I mentioned it because he was surprised at both incidents happening at a lower level tournament like this. A professional match in Guatemala or Costa Rica, it’s certainly possible.
The kid who used the racial slur will be permanently banned by USSF within a week. Not sure what happened with the parents.

“The parents would get hammered and fight”
When I was on Shore Patrol in Rota Spain they had Little League baseball, the dads would bring ice chests of beer to the games.
One Saturday big fight broke out,we ended up having to actually wrestle some of the dads down and handcuff them.It was a mess, hot as hell and everybody was all sweaty including us and dust stuck all over everybody,Some of the dads had bloody noses and lips.
Kids and some of the moms were crying. It was a bad scene.
The C.O,of the base made a rule- no alcohol at Little League games.

Disrespect will not be tolerated
Imagine being so mentally weak you need to pull a gun and potentially murder someone over a word . It’s so sad.

I coached 9-10 years olds in Dixie Youth Baseball, we only had one night game a year, the rest of the time it was moms and grandparents in folding chairs. Never a problem, they helped umpire, coach, brought drinks and snacks for both teams, cheered every kid. Our best player was a kid with one hand.
Bring back to 60's, when every kid was everybody's kid.
