For posting a photo of a middle finger up?

Really?

Way too harsh of punishment. So, what is in it for the losers nowadays? Lose, but find a way to piss of the winners, enough for them to post some type of "in your face" retort online, get to play in championship game??

Are they calling the team they beat host? As in, they hosted the tournament? If so, this seems rigged.

I think an unjust punishment on so many future lesbians is akin to a hate crime

And ESPN wonders why nobody watches them outside of football season.

This is just fricking stupid. Who gives a frick that they're flipping people off. They whipped some arse so they deserve to be in the championship game. frick ESPN.

Exactly. There was obviously bad blood between the 2 teams. The girls definitely shouldn't have done that but I don't think they should have been disqualified. They earned being there

I am all for criticizing ESPN as an organization, but I don't think ESPN had anything to do with the decision. I think they got kicked out of the tournament which happened to be aired on ESPN.

Harsh, but those girls learned a valuable lesson.

I coached in a girl's middle school basketball league that had a team kicked out due to sportsmanship. The team in question was undefeated (and much better than every other team in the league). After game they would taunt the other teams, curse them out and generally act like idiots the moment they walked in the gym.

Coach was warned to calm his team down, he didn't, and the team was kicked out.

Harsh . . . but I applaud the league for taking the action as good sportsmanship should be a large part of youth programs. Too many team members involved so it's not like you could individually punish the players and I can't think of any other form of punishment for a championship game.

Read the article and I don't see where ESPN had anything to do with the decision so I don't understand the hate for ESPN in this thread ... unless it's just generalized hate for ESPN, in which case I somewhat understand.

In your example, the team was provided an opportunity to self correct the behavior. Not sure that is the case in this example.

How convenient that the host will now get to play in the championship.. punishment seems excessive to me

If this happened in the NFL nobody would bat an eye.

How can we hold our amateur athletes to a higher standard than our professional athletes?

I doubt this was an ESPN tournament. They don't sanction or govern softball

It was Little Leagues decision, not ESPN.

They're kids. It's a game. They did something incredibly stupid and hopefully they've learned a lifelong lesson.

Lesson > Game.

This has nothing to do with pussification of America. Although, I think the better result would be to let the team still play if they have enough players and then send the girls in the picture home.

Ridiculous. The best team should still advance. Now, the championship will be bullshite for both teams in it, regardless of the result.

Sportsmanship should be encouraged, but it's not illegal to be an a-hole.

What? That if you lose as long as the winner is an a-hole you really won?

frick these tournament officials and frick ESPN who probably encouraged this. Let parents parent.

All you jackasses never flipped anyone off before? Does anyone know if the Washington team actually might have deserved this or worse? Christ what is wrong with our pansy assed nation?.

Winners are winners, losers are losers.
