I'm not saying you're wrong, but depression can be a funky thing. Rational thought doesn't come into play, sadly.

I understand depression, trust me I do, but I still have a hard time fathoming that you can't put it on a month raincheck at the least to give your family much less grieving during Christmas for the rest of their existence. For me if I were to kill myself, I'd push through the holiday season, make sure that my family's lives were in order as much as possible without me, and then kill myself. I just can't imagine doing the deed two weeks before Christmas.

Not stupid. Just don't see how a man could do that to his children. I have kids and don't understand this. Just being honest.

This.

I can't make heads or tails of it, and likely will never be able to. I wish I could have done more, but he didn't want his problems to weigh on the lives of others.

In my mind, even though it is terrible, I am glad his kids are so young. They'll probably have a much better chance of being something and not being affected on the level that it could affect already-emotional teenagers, especially since they will still be with close family.

That's the thing here... it would be simple for you, in theory. The problem is that you aren't in that situation, you know?

Some people absolutely are able to think like that, even on bleak terms. Most aren't.

I am not being rude, but calling it a dick move, etc. is kind of a dick move. It assumes that there was clear, lucid thought put into it, when it could well have been a clinical illness denying him his sense of reason.

There are far too many variables to tack on some sort of label to a decision like that.

Seriously? Depression in its worst form is as deadly as cancer. Go tell someone to put a raincheck on that one.

So terrible. Thanks for posting and reminding everyone of each person's importance to the world.

Of this terrible tragedy, both in the death of the mom and suicide in the Dad, thankfully it wasn't magnified by its being a murder-suicide . Those really break my heart for the young children. Hopefully, just hopefully, these children in the OP will have other family members (an aunt or uncle) to help raise them and they will go on to live fulfilling lives.

Again, thanks for the reminder. And along these lines, I should give the Christmas reminder to watch the greatest movie of all time , It's a Wonderful Life

Sad to hear that.

Been a lot of suicide threads on the OT lately. I know during winter time they rise but just seems like there are way too many but even 1 is too many I guess.

You are right. I just can't see that from my point of view. Wasn't trying to offend. I have almost been to that point but the only thing that saved me was my family in my mind.

War shite will rot a mans brain too.

You're right. It's been a rough time at my old base... 5 suicides this year there, and the mental health clinic has been working extended hours to help folks in the maintenance community there cope.

Edit: Bush, I am glad you didn't do it man. Truly. I have been affected personally by three suicides, one being my stepbrother who was my best friend growing up. That stuff tears those left behind apart. I am glad you are alive and well, and I mean that regardless of not knowing you.

Not trying to be a dick but how selfish does a person have to be to check out after seeing their kids lose their mom?

This is a little known secret, but people who commit suicide usually aren't capable of thinking rationally and/or overcoming the emotional pain & weight that they carry, which severely inhibits a person to think clearly, see the world clearly, appreciate the consequences of their actions, etc. For all we know, and this belief would not be uncommon even in this kind of situation, he could have been so emotionally ravaged and buried under so much pain that he honestly felt like his pain was hurting his children and that they would be better off without him. Now, no one can know if that's the case or not. But that's the type of thinking commonly found in people who are suicidal or commit suicide.

I understand the difficulty in an outsider understanding how a father could take his own life when he had two children depending on him, but it's very easy to underestimate the power mental health problems & emotional suffering has on a person, and that includes their emotional, psychological, & physical states.

It's a terrible situation for the family and especially for the children, but ask yourself how likely you think it is for a father who loves his children to take his own life without suffering from some level (probably EXTREME levels) of emotional, psychological, & cognitive impairment? People who commit suicide don't see their life, the impact of their life or their death on others, & even life in general clearly; their point of view becomes distorted, twisted, and broken.

Just some things to keep in mind before assuming that someone is selfish because they take their own life. In a very real way, the person who commits suicide is not the person they used to be (it's not who they really are anymore), they're not the person that family & friends immediately think of when trying to make sense of how & why that person could take their own life.

ETA: OP, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I seriously doubt he was being selfish. Suicidal people get into an unrealistic frame of mind. He probably thought everyone was better off without him.

Guy I grew up across the street from and idolized growing up killed himself last night. Stud athlete and former LSU baseball player.

It shook me up. I had to leave work and drive around to clear my head after I found out. I'll never understand suicide.

No wife and kids but wonderful parents and a brother who will be absolutely devastated. Not looking forward to the wake and funeral.

Sorry to hear, boosie. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Stout said that there have been a bunch of suicide threads lately... I wonder if we can get this stickied for a while to have the info available to all the affected posters?

Any of you guys think that's a good idea? I don't mind removing my story from the OP if that's what it takes.

There is no way of knowing the depths of another person's mind or what is too painful for them. It is a disease, not a weakness. Sometimes it is genetic and sometimes it is situational. One of my best friend's brother, mother and father all did the deed. So did he. They all had everything that the OT thinks is great.

Turns out it doesn't fricking matter.
