Your fun fact of the day (dammit wiki)

If you had invested $20 in Bitcoin at its very first exchange rate in October 2009 (roughly $0.00099 per coin), you would have acquired approximately 20,202 Bitcoins.
Depending on Bitcoin's market price, this investment would be worth anywhere from $1.4 billion to over $2 billion.

Does anybody remember what year he was here pushing that. I know it was in the very beginning. I didn’t really understand the whole concept, probably still don’t 100% grasp it.
But he was so convincing I was gonna throw a few hundred dollars at it just in case. Right about the time I was ready to pull the trigger. He just kind of disappeared. Wish he hung around just a little bit longer. Lol.

Billionaires don't have time for us little people who scoff at them when they tried to get us to invest about the same amount of money as a happy meal at McDonald's and set everyone on the OT and their next six generations for life and we say "nah we're good".

Of course if I had thrown a few bucks at BTC, it never would have taken off.

Around 10 years ago, I used Bovada for sports betting, and the only secure way I knew to send funds to my Bovada account was by bitcoin.
An issue with sending funds that way is that the dollars to bitcoin exchange rate fluctuates, so sometimes I’d have fractional bitcoin left in the bitcoin wallet.
During one of those transactions, I left a little more than $5 in the wallet and forgot about it.
Fast forward more than a year, and I overheard coworkers discussing the big blowup in value of bitcoin, and discovered I had $125 in the wallet.
But if I had left the entire transfer balance in the wallet, it would have grown to $12,000.

i asked my wife about putting $100 in there (we were making $27k a year teacher salary with a 1 year old at the time) and she said "if you think that's a good investment of our money..."

But think about having to worry about all your “friends” showing up in life to mooch or with great investment “ideas”, risk of kidnapping loved ones for ransom, the sugar Daddy hunters, attorney fees, etc.
A life without Bologna sandwiches is a lonely life. Celebrate your poorness!

He's still around. He was being harassed offline IIRC. Two other Money board posters that I've done well listening to were Jersey Tiger and dabigfella. JT was legit but I think he was harassed and dabigfella just left because he would want to discuss topics but would get upset if someone else had a different viewpoint from his.

I remember thinking, "Who's gonna make a ton of money with some dude selling books out of his garage?"

From Wiki
LINK
In 2013, Welsh computer engineer James Howells mistakenly disposed of a laptop hard drive containing the private key for 8,000[a] Bitcoin in the Docksway landfill in Newport, Wales. Howells subsequently assembled a team of specialists and secured funding to excavate the site, but Newport City Council refused permission, citing the environmental impact of the search including dangerous gases, methane, asbestos, and toxic leachate. If the coins are discovered, Howells proposes distributing 30% of the proceedings among the council and the population of Newport.
As of February 2025, the missing Bitcoin was worth £597 million (US$751 million). In December 2024, Howells sued the council for £495 million, with the council contesting that the device is now its property. Howells and his team are confident that retrieval of the data remains possible, while the council continues to profess its scepticism. Following a hearing, the High Court dismissed Howells' claim in January 2025, ruling that it had no prospect of success.
