re: You think you own that tractor, car, or book you bought? Nope. You licensed it.

And a lot of this tech for cars and farm equipment is for fuel efficiency and environmental stuff.
Which ironically has done more to create waste than ever before
We went from buying equipment appliances cars trucks & tractors that lasted for years with replaceable & repairable parts to filling landfills with disposable products
They have purposely made it worse for the environment & most certainly for the consumer

Remove regulations around starting up a tractor company and make a profitable enough business case to introduce tractors and farm equipment not requiring software and subscriptions.
That’s how it should be done.

Well cars/trucks last longer and are more reliable than ever before.
I can't speak for tractors or "equipment"

Not exactly. Deere would not help this man. They’re notorious for this. Cat’s approach is more customer centered. You can get a yearly subscription to Cat ET to diagnose problems and SIS Web to gain access to service letters, IRMs, and look up your own parts. You can also order parts on PCC. Your PSSR will even come out and set it up for you on your laptop when the new machine is delivered. I use to do this for my customers when I was an PSSR. And the subscription for Cat ET is nowhere near as expensive as the prices shown in that video. In fact, it’s almost 80% less than the price they showed on the video.
And if your machine is going to be down like this farmer’s machine, any dealer worth their salt will fix you up with either demo, loaner, or a rental at a very discounted price to make sure you can still operate while your machine is down.

For over 30 years in fact.
And I’m not the only one. There’s at least one more here that I know of. I’ll let them remain anonymous.

How do you think that happens?

That's because most consumers only care about the initial cost which pushes the manufacturers to make cheap shite that won't last.

This is why I legally torrent all movies and books. I own that shite.

I blame video games. I think that’s where this subscription nonsense started and now we see it everywhere. I used to be able to just buy the Ms Office suite for a couple hundred and now I have to pay yearly subscriptions that stack the costs well above what I would’ve originally purchased the product for.
I do believe though that if John Deer thinks I’m only paying to use the tractor, then I shouldn’t be on the hook for repair costs since I don’t “own it.”

Isn’t BMW trying to make shite like heated seats a subscription service or some shite

My wife’s 2022 Palisade came with an app (can’t remember the name) where she could remote start using her phone. There were other features like navigation as well. The subscription expired not long ago and was going to be something like one or two hundred dollars a year. Some stupid number. She said if I want to remote start my car I can use my fob. As for navigation, we both use the Waze app anyway. And with Apple CarPlay, it works better than the in-car nav. We told Hyundai to have a Coke and a smile when it comes to their stupid app.

This where strong FTC and DOJ come into play. Lina Khan (FTC chairwoman) has been a strong proponent of right to repair. Unfortunately she is about to be relieved of her position and I doubt trump appoints someone who is pro consumer.

It's one of the biggest issues with society today. Companies want you to own NOTHING. You can't buy shite without a subscription or license now. Digital media? Subscription. MS Office? Subscription. Cloud storage? Subscription. Photo editing software? Subscription
They want you on 60 different $7 monthly charges with services and software that can be worsened or made unavailable at a moment's notice

I hope Trump fixes this. This is terrible for everyone who buys this stuff, which is basically everyone. Even medical equipment at hospitals have this issue.
Doesn't overturning the Chevron doctrine make it harder for government to make these changes?
