You have 8 apparently identical balls, but one is heavier than the others

and you have a balance scale with which to weigh the balls

What is the fewest number of times you can use the scale to determine which is the heavier and how do you do it?

I've only got two balls. Why do you have 8?

4 and 4
Take the heavier side split 2 and 2
Take the heavier side and split 1 and 1

So 3 times

1 if you guess the right ball to begin with and use it to outweigh another

3 if you don’t start out by a lucky guess

Initial weigh in (4-4)
Split heavier side into 2-2
Split still heavier side into 1-1 to determine winner

ETA: I concede to the person who said/explained 2 below.

Four?

4 > 4

3 > 3

2 > 2

1 > 1 found the heaviest, probably not the answer though

Edit: I was close

The correct answer is 2 times.

3 x 3.
If they are equal, then the heavier ball is in the remaining 2, put them side by side.

If they are not equal, take 2 from the heavier side and put them side by side. If equal, heavier ball is the remaining one. Otherwise, heavier ball is obvious.

Answer = 2.

Just drop them all from a ladder and see which one hits first.

The fewest? Once if you guess correctly.

I've had this on an exam before. I was the only one in class to get it correct. The answer is 288
