Firefighters in Spain are battling a major wildfire that probably started after a heap of manure self-ignited amid the intense European heat wave. Around 10,000 acres of forest and other vegetation were affected by the blaze near Tarragona in the country's north-east, according to the Catalan regional government.

quote:

Authorities said the fire likely began when an "improperly managed" pile of manure self-combusted in the heat, causing sparks. Spontaneous ignitions can occur when flammable materials, such as piles of hay, compost or manure heat up to a temperature high enough to cause combustion, according to the US National Park Service.

They gonna have to put that shite out themselves.

Everybody knows the rains in Spain fall mainly in the plains.

Compost and shite can definitely catch on fire spontaneously, but I have no idea how you could accurately identify that's the cause of a massive fire. Then again, I'm not an arson investigator.

Sounds to me that it was a large pile of manure and either hay or shavings/bedding material on a farm or homestead type place. It wasn't just a pile of shite from a single animal.

I compost a lot of stuff including chicken manure from my little back yard flock and when it is mixed in the right ratio of greens (manure, grass etc.) and browns (shavings, hay, leaves etc) it will heat up quick and get very hot down in the pile. It produces so much heat that many folks are using compost piles to provide heat to greenhouses instead of gas or electricity.
So I could easily see a large pile of mixed manure and shavings getting hot enough to cause combustion.

Composting manure does get hot AF. Not sure if it can get hot enough to combust, though.

Hell, it can create a pretty decent explosion if you don't manage it right. You don't just clean the outhouse for the smell.

Ahhhh, I always wondered what people meant when they said something was going to be a shite storm. Makes sense now.

I guess it’s possible if the right conditions are in place. Composting manure does produce a lot of heat.

I've seen it happen with hay barns a few times because the hay was too green when stacked in the barn.

Had a buried compost pile in my backyard that started smoking last summer. Pretty wild to see smoke coming out of the ground like that. Gotta keep that stuff pretty well watered
