Do you have the temperament for sales? Lot of folks would like an engineer with a decent personality. O&G companies will train you as a project manager where you learn the day to day trade and then you can market the sales personality with some commercial dealings.

I took my first job at $18/hr in a inside sales program at a big distributor of O&G products with a biology background in 2014.

I have minors in business and sales. That is absolutely the direction I’m looking to go.

Just be warned that Inside Sales is one of the most brutal industries. I did it and it worked out in the end (back to outside thank God), but start with outside sales if you can since that’s not nearly as grueling.

If you have 5K coming out of college and don’t plan on any masters program, I can not recommend spending a year in Asia enough.

I definitely want to travel after graduation. I’ll check out everything you’re saying. I’d love to teach abroad and experience the world.

Yeah it’s something I see at a higher management position. Not intro level.

I have a fulfilling career now, my background got me in the doors to American companies, and it was the best time of my life. I went there when I was your age and got to see the wonders of the world and had the best time of my life even over college. Money isn’t everything, and you’re at the prime of your life to experience it. If you can afford it (which debt free and having 5K in the bank you can) fricking do it.

Depending on what you do... maybe 3K depending where you are? And that includes the flight. You can have a wonderful meal that you’d pay like $25 here for and pay a buck fifty in Asia.

So over a quarter decade ago, I was running from a bloodline of “car guys”. I studied and had that 4.0, majoring in engineering with a minor in art. Then we got pregnant and my job that paid the bills while we attended school just went away. Went to work and ended up with where I started and tried to avoid.

Go travel! Go see some shite. Stay single ‘til your 30. Slam as much arse as you can. Sew them motherfrickin oats!

Perfect. I think a lot of folks can benefit from starting at the bottom per se and then working up. And for me the bottom was fun as hell. Learned a ton and then grew exponentially.

Shoot me a PM and I can give you a little bit of a background of what I did/do if your interested.

$5, you'll live like a kind in Asia for a cpl months. Remember. It's 3rd world. Most of these people live off the equivalent of $3-400 USD a month IF that!

I’d do what I did first after graduation and go take a once in a lifetime trip somewhere. I did 57 days in Europe with a flight into Milan and a flight out of Dublin. Nothing in between and no plan. Borrowed $5k to do it and had it all paid back by April the following year after starting work in September. I had a good connection who opened some doors for me when I was back to apply for jobs, but that was a conversation starter that led to multiple offers on my return as well.

Obviously that’s a lot harder to do with everything going on now, but there’s still options. Do the Pacific Coast highway. Go rent a place in Mexico for 3 weeks. Go to the Surf Inn Hermosa in Costa Rica and drink at the local bar for a month. You have no money and endless time. Soon you will make good money and have no time. Take advantage of the former.

Moving wise, take and apply jobs for wherever you’re interested in. If BR is home, it will always be there. Leaving is the best thing you can do. It will either open your eyes and expose you to a ton more or make you realize how much you appreciate home. Neither of those things are bad.

I was leaving active duty in the USMC at 23. I wouldn't begin college for another 16 months.

That was a strange time.

When I was getting ready to graduate I had two friends who went and hiked the Appalachian Trail. My fiancé at the time wanted to take 6 months and become ski instructors before finding a job.

I rushed into they workplace. One of my few regrets was not doing either of those things before getting locked down with a job.

I am about to graduate from LSU with an engineering degree, and I'm not sure what I want to do. I'm interested in how the OT would go back and live their postgrad days.

Personally, I'd move out west. Somewhere with a lot of open land and big sky. I'd spend less time and money in bars than I did, and I'd move somewhere where I can enjoy hiking and mountain biking.

Professionally, that's the right age to take chances and be just a little carefree with my job and career choices. That's a good time to gain some awesome experience and learn some wisdom from failure that will make you stronger later on. Don't be stupid, but don't be scared, either.
