What I find amusing is the same folks who are frothing at the mouth about data centers are the same ones that nut themselves over a new refinery opening.

Somewhere between "it's the end of society as we know it" and "it does everything for me and I don't need to know how to write a sentence or look up a fact ever again" is the reality of where AI will fit into the world.

But people on the fringe will continue to fight it out from their respective redoubts.

FWIW, my single biggest issue with AI is that people are somehow under the impression it "thinks" for itself. It doesn't. It just goes out on the internet and vacuums up whatever information is out there. The problem with that is any a-hole can put whatever he wants on the internet with zero backing or facts. AI scrapes that up and gives it the same weight as an actual fact. If we get enough moon landing deniers posting, then AI is going to support that the moon landing was fake and then the people who rely solely on AI will parrot that position and it becomes de facto reality. That's a big arse problem.

People need to "trust but verify" anything coming out of AI until things change.

This is true for generative AI (what most people think of when AI is mentioned) but that's not the case for agentic AI.

Agentic AI is the true game changer.

This 100% solid advice, no matter how advanced it gets. Always be the human in the loop.

As a high school cross country coach, the amount of time copilot saves me calculating race splits is incredible. Over the last few seasons it now can convert clock times at the 1 mile, 2 mile and finish line times and can notate the fastest mile for each runner, the slowest mile for each runner. It also denoted season bests, PRs, etc. I was doing all of that manually before.

Is this the thread where we talk about every dumb person using AI to create materials and content to make them seem smart only to not realize that we all know you created that with AI and are trying to pass it off as your own?

I'm all for AI, but I'm against AGI. Since it seems like we're heading there anyways, we just have to ensure the first AI to achieve AGI is properly aligned.

Quite the opposite actually.. I like to hunt(the tree huggers don't like this, incase you weren't aware) , and eat real food. Taking away millions of acres across the country directly affects agriculture - like crops and cattle - as well as wild life habitat.

Pretty against the LNG plants popping up along Louisiana's coast as well. Detrimental to the communities and coastline down there. But banning recreational surface drive boats in the marsh will save the coast line

I hate how every grown adult just automatically includes this

data centers

to this

AI
.

You idiots realize this website is probably hosted in the cloud. AKA a datacenter. Netflix, Facebook, ChatGPT, Amazon, Spotify...the list goes on and on. These all need place to store data. So the more you generate fake pictures to post on facebook, that's more data space you need.

Bet some of them luddites ordered their sex toys from Amazon, paid for with Apple Pay and have them stored in their special drawer opened only with facial recognition.

It is. AWS to be exact.

ETA: Looks like the AI mod anchored the thread. DAMN YOU AI!

It’s kind of funny we are already here. As recently as 5-6 years ago I saw a boomer typing on his laptop at work with just his two index fingers.

I was blown away. Some of them didn’t even learn to type properly, there’s no way we are getting them to do anything else.
