Raccoons, while complete vermin, are funny, devious little bastards.

That's not a Grizzly bear that's a color phase black bear.

Yeah, there are no grizzlies in New Mexico or anywhere in the U.S. south of Wyoming. I think only Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Washington actually have grizzlies and most are in Yellowstone or Montana.

Black Bears turn colors. Well frick me I learned something new today.
Okay so in general, Do elks have any predators? I was up high in the rockies a few weeks ago driving around Estes Park. I was determined to chase down an elk with my trusty net and pocket knife. My friend who lives there said that would be an epic Darwin Award Winning Video.

Bigfoot. Aside from that, maybe mountain lions?

Easy mistake to make. He looks a little grizzled.

No. Bears don't hunt elk. They do however eat dead elk.

Crazy Ted Turner released some grizzlies on his New Mexico property some years back. At least at the time, he was the largest private landowner in NM, owning more acreage than even the state, IIRC. His property adjoins the somewhat famous Boy Scout ranch, Philmont (itself a donation from crazy Zillionaire Waite Phillips - yes, that Waite Phillips).
Anyway, before NM was completely cucked, they had a choice. The easy choice would have been to side with the green folks, their crazy billionaire landowner and just live and let the scouts suffer. Scout/black bear interactions are dicey enough - grizzlies would have almost certainly killed one or more scouts by now, if NM had been hands off.
But, NM did the right thing and issued 1 grizzly bear hunting permit for every one released by Turner into the wild. Former scouts and rangers who worked on Philmont then dutifully went out into the wilderness and killed every fricking one of those killing machines.
Good times...
