My family on my father's side, including myself, are very dark complected with jet black hair. We always thought it was Native American heritage. Turns out we have Middle Eastern in us. I think it was 3%. In the 1880's Lebanese immigrants came to the Mississippi Delta. Now, I'm not from the MS Delta, nor is my family. We're from east central MS. I'm sure one of my crazy kinfolk fricked out of these Lebanese at some point.

I'm adopted. Knew that from my adoptive parents. Never cared to know who the biological parents were.
Years later, kids wanted to know my health history, so I joined Ancestry.com. Had a few hits over the years, but not many "close relatives". One day, I got a hit that indicated I had a half-sister on the father side. Then I got hits on the mother side for a first cousin and sister.
End of story..I ended up having a half brother and sister on the mom side, and 2 sisters and a brother on the dad side. Both biological parents had died years ago.
I pursued contact. The siblings on the dad side initially corresponded with requested information, the brother wanted to do a Zoom, then one of the sisters freaked and that never went anywhere.
I petitioned the State of Florida to get my real birth certificate. Had to go to court to get records. Eventually did, but the mom's name was fake and no father indicated. Without Ancestry.com, would have never known.
State ended up contacting my half-sister on the mom side. She was interested in meeting. The brother wasn't. Since then, our families have gotten together several times and there has been some bonding going on there.
So old, it's more like an abstract concept to me at this stage of life. I glad I did it, and it's nice to have "family", but I don't feel any strong connection.
Was fascinated by the technology behind DNA testing and what kind of results it can produce besides DNA matches. My mix was predominantly:
Central & Eastern Europe - 34% (Predominantly Polish, which was consistent with the background research on the dad side)
Levant - 28% (From the mom side. Mainly Syria. Was told the story of Grandfather coming over in the early 1900s due to religious persecution. Enrolled in the Army at age 16 and was later injured, losing an arm. Have pictures of him later with no arm.)
The only "surprise" is I'm actually a "Damn Yankee" roots wise (parents were from New York). Was born in Miami originally, but no clue why that was, so at least I can still say I'm a native Floridian and Southerner by birth!)

I’m not for giving my dna to anybody but my nephew went full on genealogy study with our family. He went all in. Traced it all the way back to the 1600s in Scotland. Coat of Arms, motto etc. He’s a really smart dude with an engineering degree.
The clan is still active in Scotland. We always thought we were English.

Never did a DNA kit, but my great great grandmother was a creole from NOLA. Remember my great grandmother saying her mother’s hair was coarse, so take as you will

I was planning on doing that when I was a young man, but then I became a colossal screw-up for many years.

Clearly you didn’t see the last 007 film. Bond vs Freddy Mercury

My uncle told my brothers and I that we had a great great grandfather that was Blackfoot Indian, and that the family had been covering it up forever. He had a story about him making his way from the reservation in Montana to Chicago, and then down to southern Illinois. My uncle and grandfather were alcoholics and looked the part for native blood so I tended to believe him. My mother was really pissed with my uncle and told us there was no truth to it at all. I was curious enough to do the test. My mom was right and my uncle was FOS. Zero point zero native ancestry. Almost purely from northern Europe (English/Irish/Scots/German) but a smidgen of dot Indian and Jewish blood (around 0.5% each). Some Blackfoot would have been pretty cool.

Yeah. In Nov. 1940, my grandmother's older brother was kidnapped off the street in Bergamont, AL and taken to Quitman, MS by the father, uncle, and brothers of a young woman who claimed she was pregnant with his child, and forced to marry her at gunpoint.
When my great grandfather found out about it, he organized his own armed posse and invaded Mississippi to retrieve his son. My uncle swore until the day he died that she was mentally ill and had imagined the whole thing. There was no way the kid was his.
Turns out, that kids grand daughter did an Ancestry DNA test and guess what? We're both great grandkids of the same people.
Im other words, my uncle WAS the father. I saw the son's picture (he's dead now) and I don't know how my uncle could have denied him. He looked just like my uncle's brothers (who were both much older and living in other places at the time).

I have an uncle (by marriage) that found out he has an adult daughter
When he got back from Vietnam, he met a woman and had a brief fling
He moved away before she knew she was pregnant.
He has a super common name, and it’s not like there was an internet in the early 70’s
He contacted her, and she said she’d been looking for him her whole life
He said it was an interesting conversation with my aunt.
The daughter comes to family functions sometimes.
Her and my uncle have very similar mannerisms. Makes me laugh

My cousin took two one from 23 and me the other from Ancestry. She got completely different results from each. These aren’t very accurate just give a basic idea.

Found out I had an "uncle" I did not know about. His picture looked just like my dad. The guy lives around 10 miles from where my dad grew up.
My dad only has one sibling who is still alive.
I spoke to my brothers and we decided noting good could come from kicking that ant pile so we left it alone.

If nothing else all these stories (and there are a lot of them) should underscore the importance of wills. If your family has anything, and you or some family member does this deep dive into your familial DNA uncovering long-lost grandchildren and cousins......you better have your legal affairs in order. You don't know these people you're digging up, they are strangers in every sense. If there is money at play, and they know or even suspect it, they will come calling.
Help the older folks in your life protect themselves and their estates now. It could save a lot of headaches and money down the line. Hell, it can be contentious enough just dealing with the family you do know.

Yes. I have a half sister. My dad was a sperm donor. True story. And my dad did not have a backdoor love affair.
