'XXX-rated' throws and racist behavior anger spectators at Olympia parade in Covington

Covington keeping it classy
quote:
Maisha Harrell-Bijou had taken her young nephews, ages 2 and 4, to the Krewe of Olympia parade that rolled through downtown Covington Saturday night, hoping the youngsters would have fun and catch some trinkets.
What the family caught instead were lewd throws that their aunt said showed male genitalia and looked more like sex toys than family-friendly fare.
Meanwhile, Terrell Watts, who was watching the parade with her 4-year-old grandson, said that a rider threw a full can of beer at the boy. "I blocked it from hitting him," she said. Someone also threw a realistic-looking rubber breast at the boy, she said.
quote:
Watts and Harrell-Bijou are not the only ones complaining. So is Covington City Councilman Peter Lewis, who said that a throw that he intercepted while watching the parade with his family "was even worse than what Maisha received."
quote:
Some who are raising complaints say that African-American spectators were singled out by riders. "They would take beads and hang them in front of us and laugh at us, mock us and not throw anything," said Lewis, who is black. "Then they started throwing sex toys at the little kids, which was very inappropriate."

Marie Gras is trashy, and king cake is just a dry cinnamon bun.

They don't throw those in Mamou

The parade officers should be arrested for lewd conduct

I thought Mardi Gras paraades weren't really for kids in the first place? Has something changed?

I've been to 2 Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans and they were both a long time ago. Most of what I see now is some BS on the news or on re-runs of cops. When I hear Mardi Gras I immediately think excessive drinking.
We don't have them here so I honestly had no idea.

So teasing people and not throwing them beads is now racist behavior?

People just want to complain. I went to that parade and saw an open beer get knocked off of a float while the rider was digging around for throws and the riders next to him were throwing. One rider was wearing beads that had 2inch plastic breasts as the "medallion" on them. BFD.

Well there are (or use to be parts of) the parade route in Covington that are mainly minorities. And it can be somewhat rowdy around there

Sounds like a David Allan Coe show.

Yep... has to be because you’re black. Couldn’t be anything other than that.

Throwing a full can at anyone is a dick move and a legit complaint but judging by the other complaints, doubt happened.

Ive had riders do that to me for close to a decade now. I thought being taunted with beads was just part of Mardi Gras

I started riding in Endymion last year, and when I told my wife (who is from Miami; no pics) we were going (we have two young kids), she was nervous because the only thing she knew about Mardi Gras was what she had heard about from videos like Girls Gone Wild. She couldn't imagine it was family-friendly.
The parades themselves are family-friendly. Our kids had a blast at all the parades last year, and we're looking forward to the upcoming weekend again. As long as you keep the kids out of the Quarter, you're fine.

I'm usually not one to rail on social media, but the dumbasses that are going to Facebook to complain about trashy throws at a fricking Mardi gras parade need to be culled from the herd.
Some of my fondest memories as a 10 year old is chasing the float throwing jello shots while having boob beads around my neck and wearing purple, gold, green panties like a beanie cap.
