Since you're likely not familiar with the reporting from our press in Beijing and Hong Kong, here's a sample from each of the three:

Early missteps and state secrecy in China probably allowed the coronavirus to spread farther and faster

If anything, our reporters in Beijing and Hong Kong are far more critical of China than the press based in the US - or even our current state and federal government officials.

Without them, our understanding of current developments in China will be deeply limited.

It’s possible that the people over there see what a dictatorship actually looks like while some reporters here imagine we have a dictatorship. Hence the discrepancy in reporting.
