WWYD? Bad advice or clean conscience?

A story that I recently heard ...
A woman, very late in her elderly years, recently told the only man that she had been married to (for 70 + years) that she cheated on him. She had received this advice of coming clean after listening to a "professional."
Needless to say, the man was taken back and ended up having thoughts that the entire time he has been married to this woman, their marriage has been a "sham."
When did the affair occur you ask?
When she was 17 years old. The husband would not have found out about it. Why? Because the person that his wife had the affair with is now deceased.
What would you do? Sweep it under the rug and take it to your grave or come clean so you have peace of mind?
Lastly, she had forgiven herself (which begs the question of why come clean) and had asked God to forgive her. She was seeking her husband's forgiveness and well, that didn't go so well.

Something that obviously really troubled her since she sought the advice of a professional.
I'm not sure it is worth the pain you cause the loved one though to clean your conscience, you basically lied to them for over 50 years.
I would say don't do it, find a better way to ease your soul instead of crushing the other person for one mistake as a teenager.
My opinion would change if the situation was different like a different age or happened more often.

He should recognize that she is only telling him this because she loves him so deeply that 70 years later she still feels guilty about it. She needed to get that off her chest to forgive herself. Otherwise, she would come back as a ghost after death, that’s science.

In that case, just shut the frick up and die knowing you're a hoe.

She’s selfish and wanted to clean her conscience by dumping it on him.

I would have started by not being a cheating whore.

Les Miles would not like her, saying that she didn't have the chest for 70 years, both figuratively and literally today.

So nice of her to come clean after an entire lifetime of being supported by the husband, probably emotionally and financially. Now she has the audacity to come clean once his dick isn’t working and he can’t go get some strange. Kill the bitch.

Keep quiet and talk only to God about it.

I'm conflicted about this. You're supposed to be able to forgive yourself regardless if the offended party has forgiven you but I don't think you can truly forgive yourself until that forgiveness is granted.

horrible advice and a terribly selfish act to "confess." there's nothing to be gained from telling anyone else. you feel guilty because you know what you did, and there is no changing that. no need to tell your husband and shift the burden to him. The telling would piss me off more than knowing you cheated.
