WWL had quite a run of continuity and prime time professionals, with enough local talent to keep it real (Hap Glaudi, Nash Roberts, Frank Davis). They always reloaded with new talent (Jim Henderson, Chris Myers, Hota Kotb, etc.), until recently. Cool story - Henderson was our neighbor in Algiers and played tennis with my parents before moving to the North Shore.
Then some time after Katrina WWL waived the white flag in the fight for talent.
Most of my Jr High days ended with WWL news at 10, MASH at 10:30, with the late weather reminder from Dave Barnes as the credits rolled.
70's Dream team - Garland Robinette, Angela Hill, Hap Glaudi, Al Duckworth
Angela was at WWL for 50 years and had her own talk show that debuted about the same time as Oprah. She had Oprah as a guest, along with Bill Clinton, Willie Nelson, and others.
A youthful Dan Gill on the Angela show - 1989
edited to fix Angela's name from Davis to Hill. Angela Hill was no feminist terrorist.

WWL is so bad now it’s insane the drop off they’ve had in the last 10 years. Theres a few people still there I like but like others have said Fox 8 is now miles better and it’s not even debatable.

Yep. Still a little before my time, but I remember the Angela show. The late 1980’s and 1990’s were probably the pinnacle of local TV news when you still had a little creativity.
Now it is monkey see monkey do or money see or money do.
Someone posted an ole Christmas tape from WWL with all those legends back in the 1980’s.

Southeastern Louisiana has been fortunate to have a premier station like WWL for so long. Fox8 has taken over, but their quality is also top notch. Just really good broadcasts with outstanding production quality.
Take a vacation and tune into their local news. It's a total joke. It's literally Temu News in other areas. We are spoiled!

WWL- World Wide Loyola. WGNO - Greater New Orleans WDSU - D stands for the DeSoto Hotel, S for New Orleans States paper, and the U stands for WDSU's founder, Joseph Uhalt. WVUE- VUE is view in French WYES - Youth Education Station
Big thumbs up.. here i thought i was a NOLA know-it-all, but -outside of the WGNO thing which i already knew- tonight I actually learned somehting from the internet.. i genuinely thought they were all just randomly chosen letters .. World Wide Loyola ?? Holy shite, that’s kinda mind-blowing to find out after all these years.. i think young Karen Swensen was my favorite, but i appeared on the morning show representing my company one time and the cohost, Marc Morial’s wife, looked pretty good too .. also i knew an attractive older lady who was married to a guy named Uhalt- had no idea his family founded WDSU .

I am old enough to remember when ‘Garland & Angela’ was the NOLA version of the soap opera dramas of the day like ‘Luke & Laura’.. man, i am dating myself .
Also, if anyone remembers Alec Gifford from WDSU, I remember seeing him one time at the McDonald’s corner of Veterans & Willams in Kenna when i was a very little kid.. at the time i didnt realize that there was anything differentiating people you saw on the televison from one another.. since Happy Days was on my tv around the same time as the Channel 6 news, seeing a local news anchor was kinda like seeing the Fonz.. i didnt know any better .

Franklin was at Fox 8 then was told he wasn't going to be head meteorologists and got his foot out the door.

Yep. I had the same feeling. WWL’s problem has been an age problem. After the old guard of Dennis Waltering, Angela Hill, Don Westbrook, Jim Henderson, Phil Johnson, Frank Davis, etc., all left, there wasn’t anyone left to carry the torch, just some import from another market with a foot out the door for something better.
When Karen Swensen came back from Boston she bought them a few years.
At one point WWL news had twice the viewers than the other 3 stations had combined.

Yep. He was trying to play the age game. He knew Bob only had so many years left and when he realized Fox 8 wasn’t going to give him Bob’s spot after they brought back David Bernard to New Orleans and eventually lured Bruce Katz from WGNO.

There is no Sonic in Larose unless you want to exchange knuckles at the Double D Drive Inn. The Sonic is in Cut Off postal address but technically in Galliano.

WGNO-26 was the home of Mid-South Wrestling back in its day, every Saturday afternoon at 4 PM.
Channel 26 also boasted a killer line-up of black sitcoms on weekday evenings, including What's Happening, The Jeffersons, Gimmie a Break, and That's My Mama. I loved watching that stuff after school in the 80s.

Once WWL started hiring a bunch of DEI beast, it went down hill...

Now I know where MadTV came up with the name of a parody called That’s My White Mama with Artie Lang playing a fat white dude that switched personalities with a black woman after he hit her with a car.
