WWL: Residents decide to flee or fight for New Orleans

One New Orleans resident just bought a one-way ticket out of town after recent violence hit too close to home. While some agree it’s time to leave the city, others say the violence inspires them to stay and fight to make New Orleans better.
Trisha Burns has lived in New Orleans 17 years. She doesn’t want to stay here a day longer.
"I’m done,” Burns said, “I’m out. It's time to go."
For Burns, she's seen too many friends have close calls.
"Tuesday morning my friend was walking down Frenchman, 8 in the morning when he was stabbed when he wouldn’t give up 20 bucks,” Burns said. “Saturday I had some friends Uptown who were chilling in the backyard when two of them got shot."
She doesn't want to be next so Burns bought a plane ticket out of town.
"I've been thinking about it for a while but after this week? Two friends? That sealed the deal,” Burns said.

Anyone who can afford it is leaving.

I mean okay but this isn't really new

I heard that they were leaving and vowing to never return because the Confederates offended them. It was one thing to send your kids to cell block C to be educated, and dodge bullets in the streets, and yet quite another to be surrounded by the CSA.
That's what Mitch said...

Sounds like her friend was hit up by gutter punks.

It's getting to the point where there is no reason for people who can afford to leave to stay. Young people who are graduating from college are not moving back. There are better jobs in cities like Houston or Dallas and it is much safer. If the city leadership does not do something to deter the crime and equal the economic opportunities of other cities New Orleans will be in terrible shape in the years to come.
The city has not been this bad since its pre-Katrina days. The hurricane pushed a ton of the riff raff out but its now worse than ever.

Most New Orleanians have already fought for the city, after Katrina. There were promises made that things were going to be different. New Orleans would go through a Renaissance. 12 years later and we are back waiting for Hurricane Lee to take his revenge.
Shitty mayoral candidates with zero problems in line to be fixed. There is nothing to fight for anymore.
Flee before the next hurricane puts the nail in the coffin.

It's not new, and it's not true. Home values are constant, if not still climbing.

I know I just mean the general attitude. Other than someone who has had a personal experience exactly what is any different now?

General P.G.T. Beauregard ran out of the statute of lamentations.

Zillow 70118 and you'll see more $700k+ houses than 250k+ houses.
The crime sucks here but real estate prices are not dropping.

It's this simple:
The people they are pandering to cannot economically sustain New Orleans.
They will realize it one day. After Katrina they had the opportunity to set New Orleans on a better path, and some developers tried, but govt got in the way and prevented it from happening.
Example: replacing the projects. Great idea, but you can't replace the projects and keep them surrounded by shite. You can't make "mixed income" housing developments, cause they will become projects again. Upper middle class people aren't going to want to live next to those on welfare and housing assistance, so they aren't gonna come and those units set aside for them will be taken by people on housing assistance leaving you back to the way it was before and turning your shiny new buildings into shite.

Prices won't be ascending, that's for sure. And give it about 2-3 years from now if things continue on its current trajectory, they'll be trending lower before you know it.

No doubt the bubble will eventually pop across the city but it won't be due to folks fearing for their lives and getting out as soon as possible.
Posted on 6/6/17 at 11:47 pm to ellishughtiger
Of course. There are only a few areas of the city people actually want to live in

Well, I've had enough...I'm moving where the job outlook is better and the infrastructure is better - Detroit.
