Yep, another way to cut cost. Smaller lots.

We just built a new house and all of the doors and jambs and
Kitchen cabinets are stain grade. Crown molding window casing and
Baseboards throughout the house are stained. Unbelievable how this makes Sheetrock walls pop. Would not have done it any different.

Friend of mine lives in a house here in BR that was designed by and belonged to an architect in the 50s/60s, and it is very much in that mic century modern style. Everything in it that can be left untouched still is. And when appliances were replaced, he bought ones that are designed to look retro so they still fit in.
He has the sunken living room. Record player on a shelf that's built into the wall and the shelves are lined with albums.
It is my dream house.

I could another time. I’m at my in laws right now. I’ll see if I have any photos in this phone but I’m probably 4 phones into this house.
We still have a lot of work to do to get it where we want it.
We bought it for 100k in 2009 (right after the crash) and only pay $800 a month in mortgage and that’s WITH 6.25% interest rate. As is we think we’d get $150k based on what’s selling on our street.
We’re debating doing a construction loan since we could drop that to 3% and roll in another 100k to finish everything up at once instead of a project at a time as we’ve done so far.

I go to Palm Springs sometimes for work, and the entire city is mid century modern homes. There's a whole tourist industry for it there.
I went to one house out there for a very flamboyant "socialite" in town I had randomly met, and when you walked into his front door, you weren't actually inside yet. It was a swimming pool with a walking path leading you up to the house.
I wonder if I could find some pics on his IG page to post. His house was very artistic and he had won all kinds of awards for it.

Yep... A lot of examples of what is being posted in this thread is not 70’s houses, more mid century 50’s and early 60’s houses..
Houses built in the 70’s was the start of popcorn ceilings..

I honestly think the 70's architecture, which is largely horrible, especially of office style buildings, was oriented in a "anything goes" type space race influenced styling.
The one common difficulty in these homes for redesigning nowadays is that they mostly have small windows everywhere, with an exception of a big one in the living room.
Forget about those flat top homes, unless you enjoy leaking.
Overall, I'd rate 1970's as the worst architectural style homes of my lifetime.

WTF was going on with Baseball and Basketball uniform designs. Some of them were hideous, football not so much.
