I think all of it has to do with fuel standards. They had to switch from body on frame to unibody frames for fuel efficiency. When they did that everything else went to crap.

Now we get turbo 4 banger 4runners and cvt garbage instead of a bulletproof v6 with a 5 speed transmission.

Not sure why the auto industry got together and decided for all of these ugly designs

Like Horsemeat said, CAFE standards drove a lot of this. The switch from truck chassis to passenger cars for SUVs, the shitty shapes, the auto on/off we all hate, etc.

Broncos and Land Rovers are badass. Not sure what you're smokin.
Suburbans are fine.
The other two are arse.

You hate to see it happen to a good old name like the Pathfinder (or Chevy Blazer) but the facts are:

(A) everybody loved the size and convenience of minivans
(b) nobody liked the mommy image of minivans
(c) everybody likes to be perceived as rugged, woodsy, off-roady

Ergo you are seeing a lot of storied offroading names like Exlplorer, Blazer, Pathfinder being put on what is basically a minivan with swinging (not sliding) doors. Because the doors dont slide and the name sounds rugged, it's totally not a minivan, right mom?

And the Chevy Blazer. Other than the 4Runner and Bronco, all the old rugged SUV's have been pussified.

I would definitely consider buying an updated version of the older body style.

That’s the rock creek which is the sport version of the Pathfinder. Bought one last year and it has been a great vehicle so far. Has a pretty rugged sporty look that sets it apart from the soccer mom suvs.

I learned to drive on a manual transmission Nissan patrol in the 90s. Nissan hasn’t sold the Patrol in the US, but that car was the absolute GOAT car for driving in sand and off road.

Very sad to see Nissan falling down as a company.

Women became the primary market for SUV. The styling was changed to reflect that.
Women would agree that the old styles are way better than the new styles for most SUVs. The boxy/sharper edges on SUVs always look better.

2005 to most recent were absolutely badass vehicles. 4.0 v6, fast and super strong. Rear locker on the offroad or pro 4x models. solid clearance. and a solid/hard flat surface when back seats fold down, makes it HIGHLY useful.

best suv's ever made in my opinion. reliable as a 4 runner long term? no. but i got a 2005 that is still ticking. almost 200k

I couldn't tell you how many times i went airborne in my ol lady's xterra. It was a bad machine. I definitely would take a hard look at a new one.

That's because he posted an older model. The new 2025's actually look better and a little less crossover-y

My first car was a 2011 Xterra and I'd have another one in a heartbeat. Did so much cool shite with that car as a young person in Montana. Awesome off-road vehicle that was always ready for anything.

My parents bought me a 2007 Xterra in 2010 when I was in undergrad for Christmas one year and It was a great vehicle .

I had a 92 Isuzu Rodeo. The Rodeo and Pathfinder were two of the best looking SUVs in the day
