Chemical/Mechanical/Electrical are the 3 best. You can go in several directions with any of them.

I started off in Aerospace. While I loved it people graduating were having to go to grad school to find jobs and even then you have limited geographic areas for jobs. I’d go civil, mech, chem, Environmental, or electrical with a masters in business/management.

I've worked at alot of places with engineers, from my experience electrical engineers have the most demand. Every time we post for a new engineer you get 3 to 5 mechanicals that put in for it when what they really want is an electrical. From my experience alot of places make due with whatever engineer they have so if they have 2 mechanicals they end up doing electrical as well. The problem is its easier for an electrical to do mechanical then it is for a mechanical to do electrical. Unfortunately most people seem to go the mechanical route. Therefore the demand for electrical is higher.
This is my experience from 15 years in plant/power production field.
ETA: The original question as to aerospace...not enough jobs for that, go mechanical or electrical they can work in almost any industrial field.

Yes! Space is getting busy

Mechanical or Electrical give you the broadest job opportunities when you graduate. Aerospace puts you in a much smaller job market.

If he wants to do aerospace engineering he should go to GT

SO because you think fighter planes are cool you are advising the kid to go into aerospace engineering? I think MDMA is cool.. Maybe he should become a chemical engineer.

No. I’m an Engineering Company executive, and I worked in Aerospace for the first 8 years of my career. It is a niche business, If you are going into engineering the best bets are software and electrical.
In the 35 years since I got out of college the E&I (Electrical and Instrumentation) as well as the Automation business have thrived much more so than the other disciplines. E, I, and Automation are all primarily staffed by electrical engineers.
In short, aerospace sucks. E&I and Automation are the bomb.

Is UF cool
a FRIEND'S KID WENT TO UF and got a degree in Mechananical. He did one extra year and got Aerospace also. He joined the USMC and wants to fly an F-35. He has been through several flight schools and is still in another.
His pilot training, plus his degrees, will allow him to write his own ticket once he is out of the Marines.

What are the best schools for this?
Montana state. Guy who was chief engineer of the 3rd stage of the Saturn V went there. Didn't even have an aerospace degree, "just" mech and industrial. Guy who designed the largest self powered machine, for most of the last 60 years, was a mech engineer from UVA. The crawler-transporter was pretty freaking tits, but not as tits as servicing it for 40 years afterwards. Talk about job security.

Poor kid doesn’t stand a chance.

quote:What is even more impressive is that he is a humble, likable kid. You know immediately, upon meeting him, that you like him. He also chose the USMC because they would be physically harder on him than the USN or USAF. The last I asked was a few months back and he was still flying training jets. His mom just tested positive for the Covid.
That’s damn impressive.

He most likely won't be designing a fighter jet - lots of interesting fields in aerospace engineering. To be honest I don't think an 18 year old that isn't sure he wants to do aerospace engineering should purely base his decision on where is best for aerospace engineering or really worry too much about picking a path before he even gets to college and takes some classes.
If he definitely wants to do engineering, no need to decide what specific discipline immediately - go to a school with several good programs and figure out what he is drawn to would be my advice.
I say this as someone who started in aerospace engineering because I loved fighter jets and shite, but then realized that wasn't a likely path for me and also that I wasn't nearly as in love with the engineering of them as I was with the idea of fighter jets in general. But luckily I loved the Math I had been taking so switched to a pure math degree and just had a lot of fairly difficult electives.

ROTC with a mechanical engineering program. USAF or Navy should get you there.
If you want to look outside of the SEC I’d suggest schools in the Los Angeles region. Southern Cali has a HUGE aerospace footprint.

I started in aerospace because I loved aircraft and flying. But discovered the jobs wouldn’t be what 17 year old me thought (no shite dummy) so I went electrical cause that interested me and Katrina hit so I went into power.

Mechanical Engineering - We need some nerds to build electric cars and F150's.
