From new England and you have to consider a few things, do you like winter that can be below 10 degrees for several weeks, below 40 for several months? Fall is awesome, Spring arrives in June for about a week. Summers are nice but short. Do you like hunting and or fishing, because you are limited and season is short. Saltwater fishing is terrible. Do you like sunlight? Days are much shorter and you get a lot of overcast cloudy days in winter and spring. Fog in the summer can come inland for weeks.

New Hampshire is a beautiful state. Tons of hiking in the White Mountains, good hunting and fishing, and decent skiing in NH, ME, and VT (it's not west skiing but still fun). Canada is not that far depending on where in NH you would live. Going to get a lot of snow and golf is a 7-8 month sport there. I'd relocate there in a heartbeat

OP has made a career out of bitching about every aspect of this state, how trashy everything is here, how everyone is stupid with a NIHC, roads suck, blah, blah , blah. Why even start this thread?
Pack your shite and go. Good riddance and don't come back.

If I had family there as you do it would be a no brainer for me. But I would hate the winters, hate em.

I've got a standing job offer in Vermont, I've done a bunch of research on this exact point.
Energy is more expensive (~20%).
Real Estate is about the same
Property Taxes & Income Taxes are slightly higher
(Caveat, you can send your kids to public schools there)
(NH = 5% State Income Tax, VT = 8.95%, LA = 6%)
Your points about the weather are somewhat biased also; if you're scared of up East weather, just say you're scared.
Have two residences is the real solution or seasonally rent/lease a winter property in the south.

I’m from New Orleans and live in NH now. Similar situation as the wife was from here. Shoot me a message and happy to talk about life up here and areas to live.

And no sales tax in NH.

In your situation, I would say give it a shot. I personally would not because I don't like the cold.

Scared? I lived there for 30 years, grew up there, people need to know the difference in weather before they make a move or they sometimes regret it. Also, I would not believe all the hype about the public schools - private and parochial schools are thriving. The cost of living will certainly be more than your surface numbers. Everything is more expensive from groceries to fuel to cloths. I still have family living in NH, ME and MA and they can't believe how cheap things are when they come to visit. If you are still living in LA, then you are the one scared to move.

Probably the biggest plus is auto insurance.

When did NH implement an income tax? Best I can find there is a 5% tax on interest and dividends but 0% tax on reported W-2 wages.
Property tax is going to be high though. Gotta fund them good public schools somehow.

Are we talking $30K - $60K, or $70K - $140K?

Why?
You live in Alaska, so assuming it fits your lifestyle, but someone from south Louisiana will not be happy living in freaking New Hampshire.
