Would You Drive This? 2022 Corvette Z06

This features what might be the last new V8 designed for an automotive applications. It has an 8600 RPM redline and adequate horsepower.

Consider this America’s goodbye party for the V8.

With a screaming flat-plane-crank 5.5-liter V-8 engine that revs to 8600 rpm, the C8 Z06 is a return to the purity of the Z06's glory days.

Corvette executive chief engineer Tadge Juechter is candid about the real reason why America's sports car got a mid-engine layout: "When we went mid-engine, the justification for it wasn't the standard car." While the mid-engine architecture works great for the 10Best-winning Stingray, the bigger motivation for a new platform with the engine in the middle has everything to do with the 2023 Corvette Z06—a winged wide-body supercar aimed squarely at the enthusiast's heart.
quote:
"The higher-horsepower cars benefit the most from getting all of that traction in the back," Juechter continues. And with 670 horsepower, the all-new double-overhead-cam (DOHC) 5.5-liter V-8 is the highest-horsepower naturally aspirated V-8 ever installed in a production car, beating out the 622-hp 6.2-liter fire-breather that powered the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series
Consider this America’s goodbye party for the V8.
quote:
If debuting a naturally aspirated engine in today's turbocharged and electrified world sounds like Recaro suddenly coming out with a saddle, it's likely you haven't heard the Porsche 911 GT3's 4.0-liter flat-six's 9000-rpm call to prayer. On the last Z06 go-round, supercharging upped power, but Chevy heard a lot of feedback suggesting that the Z06 should return to the purity of the high-revving LS7 from the gen-six Corvette. Going naturally aspirated is for drivers who know the difference and crave a certain sound experience and a direct connection that turbos and hybrids can't match.

Is this a serious question?
Posted on 10/26/21 at 12:44 pm to goofball
I would drive it. I wouldn't purchase it.
Posted on 10/26/21 at 12:45 pm to goofball
Of course. Everyone would drive it.
Better question is would you spend $90k to buy it? I would not.

Grandpa is smoking your Porsche with panties in his C8. And he probably won’t even know that you were racing.
All the old ladies at Grandpa’s country club will be dropping their depends at the sight of a C8. They might think your Boxter is a cute little bug.

It is going to be interesting to see how the tuner market attacks this. At 134hp per liter there is pretty much nothing left on the NA route except for running more RPMs which given the 9k red line there isn't much left there. This would require a ground-up rebuild with a different cam profile to even eek out another 80 or so HP. Without going to a complex variable lift/duration valvetrain drivability will suffer.
The power adder route will be equally as interesting given the 12.5:1 compression ratio. Will an already extreme effective pressure of ~1430 kilopascals forced induction will potentially turn them into a grenade.
I think of you want a 1,000 HP daily you would be better off starting with the base 6.2.
If the Z06 has fixed the small handling issues of the base and Z51 and doesn't have overheating issues on the track it will be a track monster. I expect the next version (Duntov?) to be a better platform for building a straight line huge HP daily.

This x 1000- the Corvette is major supercar performance at a Platinum F250 price.
