Try the Datrana patches instead of Adderall/Vyvanse if your child has ADD its a much better alternative with better results.

Probably not, but I base that on my own experience with Ritalin when I was 13-15.
But it's hard to say for sure until you're put in that situation. I know several kids that respond well to those drugs.

First instinct is hell no. I would take me a lot of convincing to even consider it.

my boys both went to a private school that insisted we test them for adhd (they taught to the smart kids and blamed adhd if a kid struggled)....both were evaluated as adhd... although the doctor doing exam thinks kids are pushed to much and shouldn't be on meds....we went through every type of drug Adderall, Vyvanse and another one - Vyvanse had the least side effects for them but was also way more expensive - my older one stopped taking it sophomore year of HS except for ACT....younger was only takes it on test days now and he is junior in HS

Our 8 year old son is on Ritalin. He is extremely hyperactive and it helps him a lot. When he wakes up in the morning he's like a crazy person until he takes his medicine and then like 15 minutes later he's ready to learn/help/work. Doesn't take away his personality or turn him into a zombie like a lot of folks believe. We have gone to therapy, etc., but counseling is not very effective for ADHD as I understand it. It's not perfect, but it really helps him to be able to be in control of his lil' self.

Any advice or experience is much appreciated. I’ve been debating for months about this which way to go.
Yes - but it depends on the kid. Our son has severe adhd, we tried therapy and some none medicine approaches first, but he cannot get through school without it. We have him on Focalin and we only give it to him on school days and when we need him to focus and listen to us (attending a funeral would be an example). Not on weekends and not at all during the summer, except when he is at his summer camp.
We were reluctant mainly because we did not want to effect his personality, but what we have seen with the meds that he take is he still has his humor and jokes just as much, he can just focus better and pays more attention in class.

Severity of Symptoms is key. Behavioral first and combine with meds only after initial therapies behavioral modification and therapies fail to work.

Yes, we did. Our kid was adhd and dyslexia and other learning difficulties.
Hard to say if it helped him or not.
I will say that it seemed to even out his personality. Not in a good way.

Try everything in your power to help your child in every aspect of his/her life before meds. When therapy school help with academics and firstly your help in every single way. After exhausting yourself with every bit of energy into helping your child and your child still needs help then consider meds. Every case is different. Adhd brings out so many other issues and then the other issues pile on the adhd issue.

No.
Have you looked into modifying your kid's diet?

I would clean up child’s diet first. Get off the fast food/ processed junk foods and then reassess. You may be surprised

This has been my project for the last month or so, along with getting him with a personal trainer. I was thinking maybe exercise and a better diet could help. Haven’t seen much yet but it’s still early. I really appreciate all the advice. It seems overwhelmingly negative from the responses.

No way I would let my child take it

No...once they start they will likely be on this for life because they will not learn to function/cope without the medication.
