Would you allow you child to be put on these meds at 8-10 years of age? My child was diagnosed with adhd and dyslexia and they recommended vyvanse 10mg to start. I’ve never taken any and know little to nothing about it other than it’s an amphetamine and it can be addicting. Any advice or experience is much appreciated. I’ve been debating for months about this which way to go.

Can you try to get them into some therapy instead of meds? The ADHD can be helped by therapy to get them to learn how to be organized and coping methods. I would try that route first to be honest. And yes I have a child that has ADHD and we went the therapy route.

Tried a learning center last year which was supposed to be the best thing for dyslexic children and it was an absolute waste of 10k

Dang. My next thought was if you can get the Dyslexia under control that may help with the ADHD.

No way. I was on both, and Vyvanse was the worst. Very strong. It zaps your personality and made me angry. 8-10 is really young and their brains are growing and developing as it is. My elementary students on them say it turns them into a zombie.

I have been prescribed adderall and vyvanse at different stages of my life, I wouldnt allow my child to be put on it until they reached High School and there is a clear need for it.

Of course not. But I'm not a doctor.

I generally feel like medicine should be a last resort, ESPECIALLY adhd meds. The only people I know that take them are people who have been on them their entire life and can't function without them or people who abuse them to speed themselves up.

The 'actually can't function without them' group is extremely small, and the 'abuse' group is much larger.

There are a lot of people with dyslexia who grew up fine without meds, and I'd imagine there is an even larger portion who could have greatly benefited.

My advice would be to get a second, maybe even a third opinion. Don't take medical advice from TD.

It's a hard decision. If your child is capable of functioning without them, then don't put them on it. If I could go back in time, I would never do it.

Straterra is a nonstimulant for ADHD. I’m against those meds for kids unless there are no other options, because I had side effect issues and it brought out other health issues for me as an adult. I can’t imagine that on a small child.

I’ve been holding out hope he will grow out of the adhd and learn to cope with the dyslexia. He isn’t making much progress and it’s pretty damn hard to feel like you’re decision boils down to not helping him reach his potential by using drugs, or make him use drugs.

No.

Ask your doctor about Intuniv. It was developed as a blood pressure medication, but it does a tremendous job on kids with ADHD.

It's not a stimulant, it doesn't suppress their appetite and they can take it at night. It also doesn't need to be taken every day.

ETA: My fourteen year old has been on it for 7 years now. I was totally against medicating him, especially with the two drugs you mentioned, but he had an amazing pediatrician when he was seven who suggested Intuniv due to my objections. It's been a Godsend.

frick to the frick no.

Vyvanse destroyed my first marriage. My wife at the time thought she was having some depression like issues and went to a "specialist" who put her on that demon seed. She went fricking bonkers and I had her committed, and then when she went back to the doctor, he put her on it again, and fricking smirked at me doing so.

Two weeks later she started screaming about the snakes growing out of her arms and shaved off her mane of hair to get rid of the wasps living there. She went back...and he increased the dose.

That's when I checked out. You're condemning your child to life in hell if you put him or her on that drug. It's every bit as bad as meth.

It basically makes kids hyper focused onto whatever the task at hands is, turns them robotic in a way and dulls down pretty much any personality
