Would we be buying cars directly from manufacturers today without dealer protections?

Why are we being forced by government to still include a middleman in the auto buying process?

Dealer networks exist in almost everything. Ford/GM/Dodge isn't building service centers in 50 cities in all states.

We bought our Volvo online, although the final transaction and pick up was at the dealer. Deposit was online, port options were arranged through Volvo USA. Only let down in the process was at the dealership. Their service is turrible.

Car salesman are insufferable
The next car I buy will be used from Carmax or the car vending machine. That's unless I decide to splurge and buy a Tesla.

How many of those are protected and mandated by law? What if a manufacturer named Tesla had a business model they think would beat the antiquated dealer network model and wanted to sell directly to the customer, but was prohibited from competing that way in most states by protectionist policies bought and paid for by the people who most stand to be disrupted by a better business model?

Yeah thinking it's the same. Shady sales people on the factory showroom floor. Dealerships are like "warehouses" for the mfgrs to get money too for the vehicles as the dealers are purchasing them. So just like any dealer network.
I just hate the scam at the end trying to tack things on. Ask the sales rep to tell you all of what will be pushed prior to getting to the finance office, and you"ll get nowhere

LOL! Who would take your trade? Trading is actually a good deal Just make sure you get all the money. It's better since you don't get killed or robbed trying to sell yours. And what do you drive til you sell it, most people can't afford two vehicles. Plus you can save up to $2 thousand on the total price of the new car when you trade rather than buy straight out. You only pay tax on the difference! T-A-X-E-S! Where would you go to look and test and select model and equipment? Who would service it? Who would repair it? Who would do warrenty warranty repair and required maint? Where would you get parts? Further the lack of certified mechanics would be a nightmare. All vehicles are different and a dealerships mechanics soon learn exactly why a vehicle is doing what is doing or not doing. And 88% of people need auto financing. And half of those do not qualify for standard manufacturer financing. They need a dealer to supply secondary financing. And half of that half have horrible credit and need a dealer to use his expertise and connections to "put the deal together" in crafty and unconventional ways. Tesla came out with that BS but it has been a nightmare for buyer and seller. They are now putting up dealership in places. Some people lived a thousand miles from a dealership and wound up parking their cars rather than shipping the cars by truck and paying a couple thousand there and back.

Trades to the manufacturer could work just like selling a car online today, you send some pics and VIN of your car to them, they make the a offer, if you accept they pick up your trade in car when your new car is delivered.

My inlaws finally took delivery of theirs about 6 weeks ago. They said the process was smooth and straight forward.
