Oh, and the moral of the story for all you soon-to-be parents:

Don't tell anyone the names you pick out until the baby is born, and definitely don't monogram anything until you see the sex of the kid IRL.

Clearly he thinks you're a big ol' puss and he's asserting his dominance. Awesome.

OP should tell us baby's name so we can judge the level of coincidence and general desire for this name.

He's one of those people that thinks he does nothing wrong and that everyone loves him. he has a serious ego problem

tell them that you need the stuff because you still plan to use the name.

make them call your bluff. chances are that they might consider changing theirs.

I'd give the monogrammed items as gifts to the child with the stolen name, but only after he's outgrown them.

But I've got to know what the fuss is really all about. What are the two unique names and spellings? The concept of unique spelling of names is worrisome to me. Frankly, your a-hole BIL may have done your future son a gigantic favor.

Awesome suggestion. I'd probably handle it differently, but only b/c I've been a hot head lately

That is really messed up, bordeline cruel, crazy...unless it is a family name, and your dad or grandfather requested that someone be named after him to keep the name going kind of thing.
