Would the US military still dominate if every country spent the same amount on defense?

Every country spends as much as we do, or we spend as little as they do.

Is our military strength due to our ability to spend money, our fighting spirit, or a combination of both?

Outside of Desert Storm we haven't dominated too much since the Chinese crossed the Yalu River on October 19, 1950.

No other country has the industrial potential and infrastructure of the US while also being protected by 2 oceans.

One of my thoughts. I read an article once that posited that much of our power comes from our geography (to include internal mountain ranges as barriers).

When push comes to shove our best defense is the Atlantic and the Pacific. That doesn't change no matter the amount of funding. Geography is hard to beat.

By “spend as much as we do” do you mean they also give us as much money for defense as we currently give them?

I'd say both. But it's not just "money spent". All that money buys, research, innovation, technology, and machines that other countries can only dream of.

However you want to think about it. All monies are the same for every country.

The last time I saw data, total spending was something like:

US - 950B
EU - 550B
China - 350B
Russia - 250B

The X factor in all this is the armed civilian population of the U.S. Because air attacks and bombings would only get them so far in order for another country to completely dominate they would need to achieve a mainland invasion of the U.S and while equal financial footing would give them the means to do that they would most likely run into an insurgent buzz saw.

Unless of course they just wanted to go with the literal nuclear option.

if your country has or obtained the technology they would catch up. they would have to have the fighting spirit you speak of.

we can't afford the money we spend on our military anymore. i think our financial situation of spending way more than we bring in is going to be apparent soon. the combination of social security, medicare and veterens benefits take 100 % of the money we take in every year. already countries are removing their gold from our vaults and beginning to sell their us treasuries. we're 40 trillion in debt. ALL solkutions are ugly. we have to raise taxes and lower spending or we're toast. see the roman empire and the british empire.i.e., the usa is broke. unfortunately, it seems China is the next one up.

if you have a background in economics you understand what we're facing; if you don't you will find out the hard way.

Maybe 50 years ago. We don’t make shite here anymore and don’t even know how. It’s all been offshored.

Thank god for the oceans

The real strength of the US military is the professional enlisted corps, specifically NCOs and SNCOs. Most other militaries, the enlisted corps is treated as serfs or are conscripted with no formal education or training. Our enlisted has several levels of professional military education and are also expected to have some academic backgrounds too. NCOs are expected to have an Associate Degree and SNCOs are now pretty much expected to have a Bachelor's Degree (particularly E-8s and E-9s). Because of this, officers can give direction and overall intent and let the SNCOs and NCOs handle the tactical level execution in battle. Except for the AF, where the Officers are the primary combatants. Even then, the aircraft and their pilots don't fly if our enlisted don't arm, fuel, and fix the aircraft.

That’s why I said potential. If needed, the US could industrialize itself quickly and has the resources to maintain it.

aTm, a quasi military school ironically, has proven with its football program that spending doesn’t necessarily equate to success.
